AVCHD vs MPEG2-PS

I am editing a wedding that was shot with two different cameras

1. Sony DCR SR46 Format: MPEG2-PS

2. Panasonic HMC150 Video Codec: AVCHD 720p 60FPS

Using Final Cut Express Log and Transfer I am able to import the Panasonic HMC 150 footage.

However, I cannot import the Sony DCR SR46 footage. I can use MPEG STREAMCLIP however, I don't know which option to you to export it to or convert it to to be able to impot it into my FCE prodject which is set at AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1440x1080i60.

Can you advise as to what I should do?

Thank you in advance.

ALL video that you edit in FCE has to be QuickTime using either Apple DV or Apple Intermediate Codec.

When you capture/intest video, FCE automatically transcodes your video into either QT/DV (if it was DV video) or QT/AIC (if it was either HDV or AVCHD).

If you have ANY other kind of video, you have to convert it to QuickTime using one of these two codecs. In your case, convert the MPEG2-PS video to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec, select either 1280x720 or 1920x1080 frame size. You are going to have to experiment to find out what works best for you.

What is confusing about the information you provided is that your video was 720p but you are using a 1080i easy setup. How did you get 720p video in to a 1080i sequence? Is it working satisfactorily for the 720p video?

Okay, I was able to convert ti Quicktime. I can play both type of footage now in the timeline.

Two things though.

1. I checked the easy setup and even though I had chosen Apple Intermediate Codec ithe setup now says Custom Setu up. Is this okay.

2. I cannot view the video on the external monitor using an ADVC100 Canopus converter using Firewire. Is this supposed to happen and if so how will I know how my end product will look on a regular HDTV?

There is no Custom setup in FCE. I don't know how you are seeing that.

It would be better to control-click the name of your Sequence in the FCE Browser, then select Item Properties and tell us what it says for codec, frame size & vid rate.

Only DV video can be viewed on an external monitor via Firewire and a device like the ADVC100. HDV and AVCHD video cannot be viewed this way.

The only way to test how HDV or AVCHD video will look on an HDTV is export it to a format/codec that can be viewed on the HDTV -or- burn a DVD and play the DVD. Regarding export formats, regardless of the format/codec you choose you will still need some combination of a device + a connection to view it on your HDTV. This could be as simple as the video out of your Mac connected to video in on your HDTV - the exact connection depends on what your Mac and your HDTV support. The 'best' combination would be DVI or miniDisplayPort on your Mac + DVI or HDMI input on your HDTV.
