    You are welcome.

I asked if you think AASP do it cheaper or are they the same like official Apple Stores prices?

To be honest with you, I don't know. I've read stories here both ways. If there's an Apple Store in the area, I don't understand how they could not be cheaper, otherwise who'd go to them instead of the AS?

I'll see if I can get around to doing the Disk Utility soon and if I can get it all figured out...if not I may be back with more questions.

People come here to learn; some also ask questions, some also try to answer them. That's what this whole thing is here for, so we'll do our best, and when all is said and done, that's all we can do.

Also can you explain more about "booting to a different volume"? What all do you have to do to do that??

Third paragraph explains booting from your install disc, but follow it from the beginning (and really, if you go step by step, in order, I don't see how you could cause a problem):

First check the S.M.A.R.T. status on your HD: Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility > in the panel at left, select the first item in the list/your HD mechanism > look at the bottom of the main window next to S.M.A.R.T. status and see if it says “Verified” or something more ominous like “Failing.”

If S.M.A.R.T. status is "Verified," run Verify Disk > click Verify Disk at bottom of main window (wait for it to complete). If a message comes up saying you need to repair your disk:

Boot from install disc (insert disc > restart > immediately hold down the c key and keep holding it until you see “Preparing Installation”) > at first screen select the language and click Continue > click on the Utilities Menu in the menu bar > select Disk Utility > select your HD in the panel on the left side (the name of the HD’s manufacturer and the model number, usually the top item in the list) > click Repair Disk at bottom of main window. Run this at least twice, and keep running it until it says “appears ok” twice in a row. If that doesn’t happen, you may need a stronger utility (such as DriveGenius, TechToolPro, DiskWarrior) or if the directory is damaged beyond repair, you may need to reinstall the OS, or you may have a damaged HD which will need to be replaced (repair utilities can only repair the directory structure, not the HD itself). When this is finished, quit Disk Utility, quit the installer, and restart. Once booted normally, go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility and run Repair Permissions.

Okay...now how do I post the console? I can't tell if there's any errors caught. Do I just copy and paste...the whole thing??

Also, I noticed it tends to sleep and shut down more if I'm really close to the screen...probably something dealing the with motion sensors (i am talking about how it's supposed to dim when you get close to the screen, dunno if motion sensor is the correct word for it)? I don't think it changes when I get close to it...it just goes to sleep and shuts down. Weird.

Before I "Verify Disk" should I back up my data first? And what should I back up the data with? Thanks for all the help!!

Nm, I think the words I'm searching for is ambient light sensor...they don't work when I put my hands on both speakers...

That will be fine (but no promises on my being able to decipher it!).

Hmmm that would be very strange. See if you can actually make it happen consistenly.

Before I "Verify Disk" should I back up my data first?

Always always always, even if your computer is running perfectly. All HDs kept in use will die; it's not if, it's when, and some will give no warning prior to dying. One day you just won't be able to get your data.

And what should I back up the data with?

An external HD. Do you have one or are you going to have to get one? FireWire 800 is a good compromise between speed and price and reliability. If you're on a tight budget, USB is almost always the least expensive. I suggest people look at it like this: if your HD died and you lost all your data, would it have been worth it to spend $50-$200 at that point to get your data back? For most people, the answer is easily "yes." (I have a 1TB Time Machine backup, then several other HDs which I "rotate" every week or so alternate my clone backups; I also keep one off site. As you can see, my data is very important to me.)

That's the right wording, but that should be related to lighting only, not putting MBP to sleep. To check the settings, go to System Preferences > Keyboard and Energy Saver. Here's a pretty good description of it: http://osxdaily.com/2010/05/22/where-is-the-ambient-light-sensor-on-a-macbook-pr o/

EDIT: on the off-chance it's somehow related, turn the sensor off in both sys prefs and see if that makes any difference.

Here's what I have so far...

And I have a Western Digital...but I've used it on my PC and for some reason it won't work with the Mac unless I delete everything from the PC. So I guess I'm going to have to buy another external HD.

And I guess it doesn't have anythning to do with ALS as it just shut down while being no where close to screen... I also notice my computer runs a bit slower and I get the "beachball" sometimes...

It's formatted for the PC. Best to have Mac format for Mac backups.

And I guess it doesn't have anythning to do with ALS as it just shut down while being no where close to screen... I also notice my computer runs a bit slower and I get the "beachball" sometimes...

I think we agree on the ALS.

I do not know if the nice, colorful beachball is related or not. Let's see as we go.

Please note, my comments on the crash logs are little more than guesswork, so if anyone else might know what they're talking about, please feel free to jump in.

That said, I notice Coconut Batt shows up frequently and is one of the last entries listed. Make sure it's up to date. I have not used it in a long while and do not remember. If it has any kind of settings in it to control any aspects of your Mac's behavior, disable those.

Also, I don't remember if we discussed updates, but make sure everything is up to date in Software Update.

Have you run Verify Disk yet? Please do, as that could easily explain everything.

  • greyskiesblack Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Hey sorry I haven't wrote back in a long time...I haven't proceeded with verify disk because I still had to get a backup and I finally just got it the other day. (BTW, is a Seagate 500 GB good enough?) I haven't had the time to start using it yet...and haven't used my macbook pro for a while because I was getting a bit frustrated with it. I decided to do SMC one more time to see if it will fix the problem..it hasn't shut off yet but I've only started to use it so don't know how long it will be before it shuts off again, if it does.

I looked under the console after I woke it up just now and it says this:

BTW, it kept giving the same error since I woke it up at 9:03:28 PM.

Sorry if it's a lot to look at...but I hope someone can help me figure out what's going on!! If not, I hope verify disk repairs the thing! I still have "Not Charging" on the indicator and it's at 62%. Do you think this all has to do with the power adapter or something else?

It looks like it might be a hardware issue on the logic board, and if so, the logic board would need to be replaced:

I don't remember if we discussed RAM. Is this the original Apple-supplied RAM? If not, I would try troubleshooting the RAM. Shut down. Disconnect power adapter and remove battery. If the RAM you have installed is not the RAM provided by Apple, remove that RAM and install the Apple-supplied RAM. If you don't have the Apple-supplied RAM, or you already have the Apple-supplied RAM installed, remove one module, try booting, move that module to the other slot, try booting, repeat with other module.

Ditto with the Apple Hardware Test. I don't remember if we discussed that, but I would run it:

I'm using the same original RAM Apple gave me. Oddly after the reboot it has not gone to sleep (knock on wood)...is it possible that the diagnostics fixed itself? And again who knows how long that will last...but it's lasted a longer on now than it did earlier. Guess I won't find out until it happens again. Is the cursor supposed to hide itself when you type here? If so, I guess I just never noticed that before. I would hate it being a logic board problem as it's expensive...but if it's definitely that problem I don't know what to do except try to get it fixed. :-/ Yes, I did the Hardware Test and it found no errors. Haven't verified disk yet.

I gave you some "helpful answers" buttons even though I haven't got the problem fixed, but now since I've been recently laid off (yay me) I'll have more time to troubleshoot the problem...then maybe I can go back to using my MacBook Pro as a freelance graphic designer until I find a job.

Okay, so here's what I did. I went to a local PC/Mac store by me...and while the Mac experts weren't in at the time a guy there helped me with the charging issue...well we have ruled out not being the adapter as it still had the "green light" on his and the issue still presisted. I told him of the random sleep as well and he thinks all of it could be a software update issue. Do you think it could be a possibility? My latest OS is 10.6.8.

I have also backed up my drive using Time Machine. Time Machine should have backed up everything on my computer, correct, even applications? I did Verify Disk and it says "the HD appears to be ok". Does that mean there's nothing to repair?

Even though it's not totally the problem described, do you think any of these updates would help me? http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1474 or http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1402

And do you think I should try those updates before or after I reinstall the OS?

Thanks for any help continuing my Macbook Pro crisis. Ha! I guess if none of these ever work (hopefully it will) I'll be taking it back to that local shop and pray they don't charge me much...

I had the problem with my MBP randomly going to sleep with Win7 and Bootcamp when using 3D-Games.

Clean your fans. Seriously. Open up your Unibody MacBook Pro.

    Get:

    - a T6 Torx screwdriver as well as

    - a small Phillips and

    - some device to gently apply air pressure

Open the back of the MBP, unscrew the fans from the Logic Board (also disconnect the connectors carefully!). Then clean the fans and especially the part inside the MacBook Pro that the fans try to blow the air out of. Once everything is clean, put it back together and try gaming again. It solved the problem for me - and the fans had produced quite the thick layer of dust inside my MBP!
