Hi, I was having the exact same issues you are. Today I went into iTUNES, Preferences, Devices and deleted all the files listed as backup. See suggestion from Lawrence Finch. That still didn't fix it. So, I followed the other suggestion and clicked on Start-up Menu, Run and typed CMD in the box and then typed netsh winsock reset. Rebooted the laptop and completely shut off the iPAD2. Once all were running again, did the backup and everything seems to be fine. Got my fingers crossed. 🙂

Well I'm dead now. Throes everything. I did the CMD thing twice now, and now iTunes can't read data on this iPad, it sear that I must restore my iPad. That would mean to "dump" my gaming data. I tried to restore it's settings, reset the screen layout, and nothing. The thing is, that my iPad is PERFECTLY NORMAL. Everything on this iPad works like magic. But iTunes... THANKS FOR LETTING DOWN YOUR PEOPLE APPLE, WE STICK TO YOU, WE LKE YOU, AND YOU DON'T HELP US. REALY THANKS.

I am in a similar start only I am attempting to backup to a Mac. The ipad used to backup just fine, until the

update to IOS of last week. Apple support has not been helpful at all. They would not listen and kept giving

me instructions as to how to work around on a PC.

What I have tried is:

1. rebooting everyting and disconnecting all peripherials from the mac

2. deleting the lockdown files

3. deleting all old backups

Still fails

Try backing up to a windows system, after 18 hours I gave up as it was still "working" with no progress indicated.

I tried someone elses mac. I wanted 3 hours and the backup still hadn't completed and the person wanted their mac back.

I have 22GB of free memory on the ipad and 200GB+ free disk space on the mac.

The only solution offered by apple "support" was to reset the ipad and re-install all my apps. I really don't want to do that as backups just quit working and this would be the 4th time apple has had me do this. It takes lots of time

to get everything reconfigured again.

Anyone have any new ideas as to what to try?

thanks!

I just got a call from apple support and we were able to find the problem. We had to go into the folder /Users/<user>/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup

Delete all of the files in the folder.

We tried deleting the backups via itunes preferences devicies, but they failed.

Going into the folder above directly fixed the problem.

This was for a Mac running Lion (10.7.2) and iOS 5.0.1
