iPhone 4S dropping network and data at random

Hi,

I've been using an iPhone 4 on a Vodafone contract for the past 16 month and just bought an iPhone 4S direct from Apple. It arrived on Friday morning and I got it set up correctly as far as I can tell.

When I first turn it on, it works lovely and exactly as I would expect, able to make calls, send texts and access the internet via the cellular network. However, at what appears to be random, the network will disappear (no bars of signal) stopping me making calls and texts, but still allowing me to access the internet. Sometimes, the Internet goes, but I can still make calls and texts. Other times, everything is gone and I get "No Signal" where it normally says Vodafone UK.

So when trying to fix this problem after it's noticed, I try putting it into Airplane mode and back out. The phone scans for a network and goes back to the same state as before I tried this fix. I have tried resetting network settings, but this doesn't change anything. The only thing that actually fixes it temporarily is turning the phone right off and back on again.

At this stage I assume this is a bug with the software, but I wondered if anyone else is experiencing anything like this? If no one is, I will take it up with Apple, but I don't really want to do that as I love the new phone so much!!

Cheers, Stuart

happening here in florida, as well. i bought iphone 4s - arrived a few days ago. paid full price for unlocked from apple so i could continue with tmobile. the phone didnt arrive with a sim card. had to get mini sim from TM.

regardless of APN settings added, wifi on and off, data roaming on and off, airport , all power on and off. none are guarenteed fixes on my phone nor is the connection consistent. Tmoobile says it must be off the 3g network and isnt compatible with 4g... in order to get a service connection by turning wifi off i can link randomly with the 2g. although that drops and goes to no service as often as well.

why did i buy a iphone 4s with cloud when im expected to disable wifi, inet and use 2g ?....because neither tmobile nor apple mentioned or were aware of the extent of thier conflicts..?? by the way, i love the phone and really respect the help tmobile tried to give ...apple to.

i went to verizon tonight, a supported carrier to change my service. they were unable to turn off 3g, (tmobiles complaint) and unable to find verizon towers to be recognized. we couldnt get the phone past the reset. it searched and only found att. verizon removes the sim and in past cases, he said, places the phone in correct network. (att sim triggers the GMCA network)

apple tech tried to help and all my supports were eager to go home. is thiis phone a lemon or have a glitch and is permanently 'unlocked'? or unlocked but unwilling to regognize anything but the GmCA network?

When the phone leaves the factory.... settings, are they different for ATT vs. Verizon? i thought i was getting the freedom to choose or change service providers?

how do i get a new unlocked apple phone that wont lock on any signal ...commit to the GSM ? does this limit me for updates in the future?

unlocking the sim pin would be helpful especially in europe where there are no conflicting networks vying for signal strength in the same yard....

does anyone have a verizon 4s and know if they have updated APN settings?

My options are return the phone and re-order spacific to which carrier but with the holidays that means wait another ? 3 weeks for phone? Apple suggested a blank sim which ill track down in am. its frustrating.

im doing that restore now. i did it with apple tech last night but the updates are different then what we encountered. thanks michal.kos

ill do the ipad2 next ...maybe without the sim card in i can go straight to verizon in am. (i still think this is a network carrier conflict issue but any updates are helpful!)

The update worked for me. Just updated yesterday night. Now, all my SIM's are working great. Been just 4 hours, and no network search or failure. Will update after 2-3 days of extensive use. But it's still better than it was before. Initially, none of my India SIM's worked for more than 1 hour. Made 1 call and it failed to make the second one. Now, had already made 3-4 calls continuously, received calls and sent/received messages. Happy to see, Apple acknowledged the issue and gave a fix.

Hope, it works for everyone 🙂. Cheers!!!
