iPhone 4S dropping network and data at random

Hi,

I've been using an iPhone 4 on a Vodafone contract for the past 16 month and just bought an iPhone 4S direct from Apple. It arrived on Friday morning and I got it set up correctly as far as I can tell.

When I first turn it on, it works lovely and exactly as I would expect, able to make calls, send texts and access the internet via the cellular network. However, at what appears to be random, the network will disappear (no bars of signal) stopping me making calls and texts, but still allowing me to access the internet. Sometimes, the Internet goes, but I can still make calls and texts. Other times, everything is gone and I get "No Signal" where it normally says Vodafone UK.

So when trying to fix this problem after it's noticed, I try putting it into Airplane mode and back out. The phone scans for a network and goes back to the same state as before I tried this fix. I have tried resetting network settings, but this doesn't change anything. The only thing that actually fixes it temporarily is turning the phone right off and back on again.

At this stage I assume this is a bug with the software, but I wondered if anyone else is experiencing anything like this? If no one is, I will take it up with Apple, but I don't really want to do that as I love the new phone so much!!

Cheers, Stuart

i am using Avea from Turkey and if you use Mobile Data it always disconnects from network starts "searching" closing the mobile data solves the problem and let you use the phone as a simple phone (no smart phone)

people who may chance to call apple online support and tell that ios 5.0.1 is useless and causes this thing(52.000 people read this discussion and no official answer)

Hi Mandachuva

As you probably noticed going thru the forum the no-service issue affects mostly people who bought their phones overseas then returned to homecountries and are unable to easily fix or replace their phones.

Most of those people are not from the US and since Apple has probably already sold a couple of milion units of iPhone 4s and most of them in USA only minority of units worldwide is affected.

Since unlucky customers are unlikely to be a target group for Apple, their dissatisfaction with Apple product or lack of customer service is not going to affect Apple's sales no matter how loud you shout and how many forums you visit or how many times you contact Apple.

So do DO NOT expect any action/ apologies/ replacement action taken by Apple.

They just do not have to bother to do anything - it is only additional unecessarry costs for Apple which they're NOT going to take.

The only thing you can do is to swap your phone somehow in the country of origin then sell it and buy another working phone by a different manufacturer and never buy anything from Apple again. This is the only reasonable thing you can do just to save your money and time. I am waiting to have my phone swapped in Germany and can't wait to get rid of it and forget about Apple forever...

26 hours running on update iOs 5.0.1 (9A406) and the simcard and cellular network connectivity haven't resurfaced. I think the latest build works for a batch of units but not for all. They might need to do another update that will target those units that haven't been "fixed." Might be intereseting to come up with a detailed commonality table of which iPhone 4S serials/IMEIs have been fixed and which haven't.

Here in Russia I have completely the same problem with all types of SIMs from two of three providers in Moscow region - Beeline and Megefon. SIM card from the third provider - MTS works perfectly!

I tried 5.0.1 (9A405), 5.0.1 (9A406), 5.1 beta 1, 5.1 beta 2 and feel no difference at all.

Now I'm on 5.1 beta 2 and using MTS I'm almost happy.

I don't know if it means that the problem is in SIM card or in provider's network configuration. But I do know that it's not a hardware fault in iPhone.

Hope it will be helpful (at least for those of us who is in Russia)
