iPhone 4S dropping network and data at random

Did you hold shift (or option if using a mac) and click 'Check for Update', then select your 5.1 b3 firmware? Or did you shift-click restore instead? Restore won't work.

Oh my word. I hit restore with the shift button on a pc. Now when I plug into itunes it tells me I need to be a developer. I have no option to restore or anything, only eject.

Hmm, all I can really think of is to DFU your iPhone (hold home and power buttons until iPhone turns off, then release power button, keep holding home button) and then the iPhone will be detected with no option other than to restore. Then, try restoring back to 5.0.1. It's all I can think of. :/

Still working fine with me the beta 3. Can you restore the way it was (5.0.1) in case your phone is unable to activate, then use shift (Windows) or ALT (Mac) + Update and select the firmware you downloaded.

In my case I just did the Update, not restore.

For everyone else, I can happily confirm that if you shift-click the 'Check for Update' or 'Update' button and select the firmware, 5.1 beta 3 successfully works, no developer account needed. I still wouldn't restore after updating however.

Thank you, you have definately saved me a sleepless night. Not only has it worked but I am also running on 5.1b3 now. So far so good, but it has only been about 10 mins.

Will update everyone on this.

Well, I've always got 5 bars, and still get that on 3G. I get 4 bars on EDGE. However my 3G speeds have increased to about 8.5 - 9Mbps inside my house, which is nice. Battery: Haven't had it for long, but seems like a bit of an improvement (+20%). All in all I'm pretty happy with it 😎

No problem. I'll keep an eye out for battery and reception but note that I wasn't having problems either of those. Only Invalid sim and about 50% success rate of outgoing calls.

Is just i wonder when the official 5.1 is out how to processs the update, on air or through i tune update/restore thingy.

When the official 5.1 comes out, anyone will be able to sign it, not just developers. So you can restore or update normally and the update will work just fine. It will come out over the air too if you'd prefer. If an 5.1b4 is released, I'd research before updating OTA incase it attempts a reactivation, as it'll reject you if you're not a dev. Don't think it does, but best to be on the safe side.

I had tried to install iOS5.1 B3 but it still need developer account. Please help.

Today I made the mistake of hitting 'restore' instead of 'update with the 5.1B3.

If that's what you did, u need to put into DFU mode (hold sleep and home until device shuts off, then let go sleep alone).

iTunes should recognize this, and allow u to reinstall 5.0.1.

You have to shift click the 'Check for Update' or 'Update' button in iTunes (or option click if on a Mac) then select the iOS5.1b3 firmware. If you instead shift-clicked Restore and now have a device that won't activate, you did it wrong. Try DFUing your iPhone, restoring to 5.0.1, then reupdating to b3 using the method I proposed above.
