iPhone 4S dropping network and data at random

Hi,

I've been using an iPhone 4 on a Vodafone contract for the past 16 month and just bought an iPhone 4S direct from Apple. It arrived on Friday morning and I got it set up correctly as far as I can tell.

When I first turn it on, it works lovely and exactly as I would expect, able to make calls, send texts and access the internet via the cellular network. However, at what appears to be random, the network will disappear (no bars of signal) stopping me making calls and texts, but still allowing me to access the internet. Sometimes, the Internet goes, but I can still make calls and texts. Other times, everything is gone and I get "No Signal" where it normally says Vodafone UK.

So when trying to fix this problem after it's noticed, I try putting it into Airplane mode and back out. The phone scans for a network and goes back to the same state as before I tried this fix. I have tried resetting network settings, but this doesn't change anything. The only thing that actually fixes it temporarily is turning the phone right off and back on again.

At this stage I assume this is a bug with the software, but I wondered if anyone else is experiencing anything like this? If no one is, I will take it up with Apple, but I don't really want to do that as I love the new phone so much!!

Cheers, Stuart

Hello,

I've decided to go to my carrir Shop and have ask to exchange my iPhone 4S. My iPhone has been sent to Apple, who must decide to exchange it or not. This can takes 2 weeks.

My carrier has lent me an iPhone 4 (not a 4S) with iOs 5.0.1 (9A405). It seemed to work without network dropping. At home, i've made a restore but the iOs is still (9A405) and restore my settings and app from my iCloud backup.

Now, I've network dropping...

The iOs 5.1 should be available on march 9. Wait and see....

3G on/off switch sounds like a workaround for the hardware/software issue. My first iPhone 4S had the problem of switching the network constantly and dropping network. Probably turning 3G would have solved the problem as then it would have not tried to connect the 3G network. But that sounds more like hiding the problem than solving it. My replacement phone with the same firmware instead works without problems. No constant network switching or dropping from the network. Based on that it sounds like a hardware related problem. But maybe in 5.1 Beta 3, they have found workarounds to solve the problems in the hardware. One thing is to turn 3G off, and after that you don't have anymore 3G network problems. But I rather have phone where (hopefully) the root cause is fixed.

You do realise the problems are fixed without manually turning 3G off.

I live in an area where the phone constantly switches between the two and since the Beta I never have network drops at all.

A work around makes it sounds like they can't fix it without sacrificing something else. It does not do that.

If it was a hardware issue that means ALL phones from the same manufacturing batch would have the problem.

Software is not like that. You can have identical hardware and software can still cause problems.

The 3G switch was reintroduced because many people around the world prefer to use EGDE. Better battery life and all that.

Mod delete my post where I said that it was a hardware problem... suspicious!

whatever.

Update: 2nd day with my new iPhone 4s

Drops: 0

SIM Cards Problems: 0

Lost Connections: 0

Firmware: 9A406

Still thinking ist a hardware issue... in fact ITS A HARDWARE ISSUE.

If you guys have the same problem, go to your carrier company and ask for the change of the device. Its the only solution effective so far. Downloading beta's and so on is like cover the sun with a finger.

You shouldn't have problems with this phone.

Note: This message will be erased by apple in the next 24 hours

LOL they`ve deleted a lot of useful posts. Apple`s KGB 😉

They don`t want to admit like Loyo! said: ITS A HARDWARE ISSUE!!

Partially I understand them: changing milions of phones all over the world would be a massive problem.

So don`t wait! After my advices few of my friends have recived new phones from january 2012 like ME and tehy re working properly. Mine works fine for 3 weeks until now.

In Poland it takes 4-5 days by sending ur phone with UPS services a recive a new one. In the service point they dont even ask for details by simply exchanging the phone AND ITS LIKE IT SHOULD BE! Phone has to phone!!

did you notice any significat change in battery life on your new phone?

i'm asking this because i'm not satisfied with phone's battery life either. i think battery issue might be connected to constant losing & searching signal again and again. is new phone's battery life same like before, on your old phone?

I was also hoping that its a software issue, you are right think its. Hardware prob

Got my phone replaced and there is no signal droppings anymore, but with the new phone comes new probs...

When I make calls not all the time but sometimes there is only a loop of my voice so I need to drop the call and call back again :( but to network problems....

I had similar problem when I bought my Iphone 4s in Feb 2012 in India. I followed the below procedure and it started working fine without any problem.

IPhone 4S purchased any where have lot of problems while using in India particularly..Airtel Network. I have struggled for 2 weeks with Airtel micro SIM..finally solved the problem. Just down load itunes(latest verson) in your computer. Connect I-Phone 4s to the computer.Open i tunes.Your i-phone name will appear on the left side of itunes menu. Click on that.Right side option for Version is available.Under Version..there are 2 options..update and restore. Click on restore..It took me 1 hour (my internet speed was 2 mbps) to upload latest factory setting with unlock option. While download never disconnect your i-phone or internet. If in between any interruption then download starts from the begginning.Once restore setting your i-phone 4s works without any problem.

Update

4th day with the new iPhone

Drops: 0

SIM Cards Problems: 0

Lost Connections: 0

Firmware: 9A406

Conclusion: Hardware Issue.

Maybe with the firmware 5.1 some problems get solved, but the empirical explanation is that with the old iPhone 4s and the last firmware (9A406) had drops, SIM problems and so on, and on and on, now, with the new replaced iPhone, no problems at all.

Go to your carriers if you have the problem and ask for a replacement.

I will kep updating during the week.
