iPhone 4S dropping network and data at random

Hi,

I've been using an iPhone 4 on a Vodafone contract for the past 16 month and just bought an iPhone 4S direct from Apple. It arrived on Friday morning and I got it set up correctly as far as I can tell.

When I first turn it on, it works lovely and exactly as I would expect, able to make calls, send texts and access the internet via the cellular network. However, at what appears to be random, the network will disappear (no bars of signal) stopping me making calls and texts, but still allowing me to access the internet. Sometimes, the Internet goes, but I can still make calls and texts. Other times, everything is gone and I get "No Signal" where it normally says Vodafone UK.

So when trying to fix this problem after it's noticed, I try putting it into Airplane mode and back out. The phone scans for a network and goes back to the same state as before I tried this fix. I have tried resetting network settings, but this doesn't change anything. The only thing that actually fixes it temporarily is turning the phone right off and back on again.

At this stage I assume this is a bug with the software, but I wondered if anyone else is experiencing anything like this? If no one is, I will take it up with Apple, but I don't really want to do that as I love the new phone so much!!

Cheers, Stuart

I've given up. Since the update did not fix this problem, I am sending my new phone to Apple.

Really terrible from Apple to leave so many people out in the cold.

They should recognize that this is a common problem, either do a recall of faulty phones or come up with a solution. But now with this new update, god only knows when new update will happen and if it will fix this problem or not.

I am well disapointed. Have we got at least 1 message from support on this thread??

I appear to have the same problem but removing the sim lock didn't fix it.

Am connected to the UK Orange network, it worked absolutely fine until the 10th and then the problems started so i don't believe it's a phone issue. When use General>Network and disable mobile data the problem disapears and i can maintain a solid connection to the network. when i set the slider to on it instantly connects to the 3G network (i'm in a great reception area). but within 30 seconds it drops to "searching" and continues doing this every minute (or less).

Orange also have an arrangement with T-Mobile currently in which we can use either network. I was advised by Orange that to resolve this problem i should restrict the phone to T-Mobile. I did this but it did not resolve the problem. The only way i can keep the mobile connected to the network is to disable mobile data.

Orange advised that they are upgrading the network towers in the area and it is their assertion that the problem is their network. But given the number of other users experiencing problem, this would appear to be unlikely. I also don't see why it would be a hardware problem given that the phone was fine from purchase until the 10th November.

Have all the issues above in sweden using tele2

tried all the things above, called Apple support and was asked to remove sim pin, flight mode, resetting the phone.

Nothing has helped. The thing that irritates me the most is that these problems are not recognised by the support team at Apple.

I´m having my phone replaced but as my operator told me, it´s most likely that I will have the same problems with the new one.

I cant go back to my old 3gs since I had my sim card replaced to a micro...

Please solve this issue not just ASAP, but rather yesterday!!!

After 5.0.1. my phone (4s) has gone from bad to horrible.

Now it mostly "No Service". (I'm on LUXGSM; not great 3G coverage.)

Obvoiusly there is something wrong with the modem/antenna/sim thing. It always took a long time for the phone to sim-unlock after PIN was inputted. It didn't allow me to disable pin-lock on the SIM so I did it from my old iPhone 4. Now the SIMcard is unlocked on the 4s but still same issue.

I've done a full-restore as new phone into 5.0.1. Disabling cellular data doesn't help.

My model is: MD242FB, Modem Firmware: 1.0.13

Would be interesting to get other ppl's model nr and modem firmware. Also from ppl with phones that actually work !

Hi, I have similar problems. Got 2 Iphone 4S on thuesday 8. of november, had 2 Iphone4 before, only switched the simcards, no problems for 3 days. On Friday morning 11/11 I upgraded to I.OS 5.0.1 on both machines.

One is a 16GB the othe a 32GB . After the update, the 16GB keeps dropping its network for no apparent reason. Network is LUXGSM here in Luxemburg. The 32GB Iphone4S is working properly, no problems detected so far. For me the problem is clearly not a malfunction of the Iphone's antenna, but has something to do with updating to I.OS 5.0.1 . Before , both Iphones worked well, altough they were quit power thirsty...but this could be because they were brand new. What are we waiting for now ? Another update to fix this issue ?
