Q: iPhone 4S dropping network and data at random

Hi,

 

I've been using an iPhone 4 on a Vodafone contract for the past 16 month and just bought an iPhone 4S direct from Apple. It arrived on Friday morning and I got it set up correctly as far as I can tell.

 

When I first turn it on, it works lovely and exactly as I would expect, able to make calls, send texts and access the internet via the cellular network. However, at what appears to be random, the network will disappear (no bars of signal) stopping me making calls and texts, but still allowing me to access the internet.  Sometimes, the Internet goes, but I can still make calls and texts.  Other times, everything is gone and I get "No Signal" where it normally says Vodafone UK.

 

So when trying to fix this problem after it's noticed, I try putting it into Airplane mode and back out.  The phone scans for a network and goes back to the same state as before I tried this fix. I have tried resetting network settings, but this doesn't change anything. The only thing that actually fixes it temporarily is turning the phone right off and back on again.

 

At this stage I assume this is a bug with the software, but I wondered if anyone else is experiencing anything like this? If no one is, I will take it up with Apple, but I don't really want to do that as I love the new phone so much!!

Same issue here in Germany with T-Mobile.

The only way to overcome this is to disable the SIM PIN.

Not a real solution but that solves the issues for now.

    I just called Apple Care. The advisor then checked back with a senior advisor and told me that Apple knows that the problem exists and a new software update will be released soon. This update should fix the problem for us.

    Strange, i had all the same problems described here.
    I also restored, changed settings etc. Nothing!

     

    Now, i ejected my sim and turned the phone off.
    Restart the phone without the sim and then i put the sim back in.
    So far so good.In the last 4-5 hours i didn't lose my network and can call everybody i want to without the "No service" and reset errors.

    Don't know if something is changed but still no drops of the network. Lets hope so.

     

    Maybe something you can try...

    Got a second new MicroSIM card, this time from my main operator, and it seems to be working fine as well.

     

    So looks like replacing SIM cards should work.

    I replaced my old cutted sim today with a new original micro-sim (NL Telfort) and my problem is solved......

    I just get new sim from my carrier (TELE2) and still have same problems. I switch to new carrier (LMT) sim. Now i have no problem. So the result, i have 2 tele2 sim cards, both don't work. And now my new LMT sim, that work fine. Tele2 sim cards work fine in my old 3gs(iOS4) and 2g iphones. So maybe it's just TELE2 don't support my 4s. Or maybe it's apple put something into iOS5 or 4s.

    Being a user who has experienced this issue sporadically since purchasing my iPhone 4S (AT&T) on the day of its launch last month (Oct. 14), and after reading every comment in this discussion, I am inclined to believe the root cause of the "data connection loss" to be either an 1) iOS 5 and 5.01 defect; and/or, 2) iPhone 4S modem hardware/modem driver defect.

     

    At times I have had 3-5 bars of 3G signal; though, unable to send SMS messages, send and receive emails, access websites using Safari, and utilize any app that requires an Internet connection.  I am able, however, to place and receive voice calls every time this issue arises.

     

    Updating my device from iOS 5 to iOS 5.01 last week (Nov. 11) did not resolve this issue.

     

    I attempted to bring this to the attentions of AT&T and Apple.  Both parties have requested that I perform a factory reset on my device, which I have done on two separate occasions, however, without any resolution to this issue whatsoever.

     

    I agree with all of those in this and other Apple Support Community discussions who strongly urge Apple to acknowledge and disclose this issue to its affected customers.  Shame on Apple for not only withholding such action, but for wasting their resources and customers' time by swapping defective used iPhones for defective new iPhones.

    you cant....but i tried to switch my phone on and off and then i took a sim card from iphone and put it back right away and its working properly now..:)

    Hi all,

    Had the same problem with missing connection after update to iOS 5.01. Tried everything with no luck.-untill now. I Got e new micro sim from my Carrier-  original micro sim (u sim) . Everything is working now.

    I'm on Verizon with an iPhone 4 and I updated (OTA) on Monday morning. After my update, my 3G service has been garbage. It comes and goes, disappears completely for extended amounts of time, I don't get 3G service in areas that I did before the update, etc.

     

    It is annoying, partly b/c I'm paying for 3G service from Verizon and now I'm not getting fully what I'm paying for.

     

    Anyone else experiencing the same thing?
