Q: iPhone 4S dropping network and data at random

Hi,

I've been using an iPhone 4 on a Vodafone contract for the past 16 month and just bought an iPhone 4S direct from Apple. It arrived on Friday morning and I got it set up correctly as far as I can tell.

When I first turn it on, it works lovely and exactly as I would expect, able to make calls, send texts and access the internet via the cellular network. However, at what appears to be random, the network will disappear (no bars of signal) stopping me making calls and texts, but still allowing me to access the internet.  Sometimes, the Internet goes, but I can still make calls and texts.  Other times, everything is gone and I get "No Signal" where it normally says Vodafone UK.

So when trying to fix this problem after it's noticed, I try putting it into Airplane mode and back out.  The phone scans for a network and goes back to the same state as before I tried this fix. I have tried resetting network settings, but this doesn't change anything. The only thing that actually fixes it temporarily is turning the phone right off and back on again.

At this stage I assume this is a bug with the software, but I wondered if anyone else is experiencing anything like this? If no one is, I will take it up with Apple, but I don't really want to do that as I love the new phone so much!!

Cheers, Stuart

I've got the same issues on my 4S in Russia (Beeline). This problems were on original iOS 5.0.

When I'm using AppStore, Wi-Fi connection suddenly fails, I need to reconnect to Wi-Fi point to start using wireless connection again.

The cellular network, the indicator of signal actually, often shows an empty signal, but the carrier name is still on.

SIM-card doesn't fail, like people tell (yet).

Hope for solving this issues, thanx!

    Hey guys!
I'm on Fido in Canada and I'm having a similar issue. Phone worked great on ios5.0.0 but after the 5.0.1 i've noticed the above mentioned issues. My phone does something similar. After having full bars the network connection will simply drop, sometimes instantly and come back on (displays bars followed by fido followed by the 3g symbol). However, data will not work (no internet, calling, text, siri, imessage). The phone will not say it's lost connection, but it's functionality is cut. Several things I try usually fix the issue including: power cycle, sim pull, network reset and airplane mode. I am getting very tired of having to hope my phone is working all the time.

This issue also happens often when travelling where the signal drops. After "no service" followed by "searching" is on the screen the phone will find the fido network...and same thing, no phone functionality, no data etc..and the solution is always to airplane mode it or power cycle.

    Thanks!

    Changing my Sim solved it.

My Carrier (Telfort) sent me a new 32K sim.

Hi folk, after having a week without a phone and trying everything to get it going again the solution is to get a specific kind of simcard. attention, the staff of your provider might not now of this, as they did not now at Telenor Denmark, so after giving my 2 times the same or wrong simcard, they finally found out it has to be a specific one, and  as i read here Apple told the mobile provider also about that, but many of them didnt really catch that apparently. They told me of a U sim, even though they couldnt explaine to me what it ment or what it stands for, some say it should be a 128k sim, anyhow the solution will be to get the right kind of sim....so keep knocking on your providers door so you eventually get the correct one. good luck!!!

    Hi,

I've got my iPhone 4S, bought from Canada and am using it in Dubai. I've upgraded the software too.

When insert SIM card, it shows "E" sign close to the signal bar and I could make or receive couple of calls.

After "3G" signs appears, then it's over. No more call can be made or received. Data download also fails.

Contacted the service provider and was advised to reset netwroking, but it didn't work again.

Apple has only authorized dealer in this part of world. No direct presence. I called apple hotline and spoke to an agent and he suggested to take my iPhone to the authorized agent and have it replaced. Surprizingnly, when I visited them, they've said, since this phone is purchased out of Dubai, they can't replace it.

I've then informed apple and they also couldn't convince the authorized agent to do so. They've suggested to try the same with other countries close in the region.

What worries me is that we all trust this brand, and somehow got upclose and personal with it and if this is the way they react to the customer needs, then it's a matter to be concern with.

I don't know if any of apple people read any of these blogs, but I really want to let them know what's going on with the brand name in this region.

I'm not sure if the phone can get fixed as all I'm reading in here is hopeless. But not attending to it is also not acceptable.

Anyways, best of luch for all of us, who're facing similar problems and let's hope a solution will be given to it as soon as possble.

I found the perfect solution to this problem.

Returned the 4S and went back to my 4 that works flawlessly.

Let them figure it all out first and then I will think about it again.

Hej PatchWORKS, hvordan kaldes denne type simkort? Jeg bruger også Telenor, og jeg spurgte så sent som tirsdag til problemet, uden at servicefolkene hos Telenor (Randers) kunne løse dette.

    Dear all,

I have just resolved my problem with iphone 4s. After updated, my ip4s dropped network, I cannot make any call.

I restored again with FTU mode or DFU mode...(sorry I am not sure exactly name of this mode). After that, I changed my sim from vinaphone network to viettel network. Everything's ok.

Strong network, 3G, wifi, siri... bla bla. And draining battery is also resolved! I charged 100%, from 19:00 to 7pm it just dropped 2% for standby.

OMG, my ip4s is ok again.

I hope my case will help someone!

I have just bought an iPHONE 4S 64GB from the Austrian Provider A1.  At the beginning it seemed to work well apart from taking an unexpected long time to unlock the SIM Card.

But suddenly  - without any warning  - I could not use the telephone any more and the following two messages were shown:

    SIM-Fehler=SIM failure

    Netzwerkverbindung verloren= Lost network

I called my provider A1. They suggested the following remedy:

    1.to update to iOS5.0.1 and

2.to unlock the SIM Card (which is  - in terms of safety -  quite risky)

But nevertheless I did both. On the next day the very same happened. Again the following messages were shown and I had to reboot the iPhone again.

    Then the following message appeared:

ungültige SIM Karte= invalid SIM card

Taking into account the big amount of money I have spent, I am very disappointed that the main function of a telephone i.e. to make a telephone call is not working.

I urgently ask Apple  to provide information how to fix this problem.

    Hi Hans,

I have exactly they same issue and did the same thing.  First the SIM took ages to unlock and battery was very bad. I then unlocked the SIM from another phone; didn't help.  And finally, upgraded to 5.0.1. which made the phone completely useless.  I now use my old Nokia E71...

My provider (LUXGSM) offered me a piece of plastic to put the micro-sim into so I could use it on non-micro-SIMcard-phone.  That isn't a very good deal for me since I'm on an expensive contract with unlimited data and voice which I don't use...

A new phone is the only solution I think.

Apparently there is another solution than a new phone for LUXGSM users. Talked to them yesterday. They will have new simcards this week, probably tuesday. Apparently they tested them and they work.

    Good night from Spain :-)

Well, my iphone 4s works perfect since i put a micro sim 128K from other network (Vodafone), i was using Orange with 64 k microsim, i have changed the micro sim for 3 times and the phone never works good, i test this 3 micro sim in a Iphone 4 With IOS 4.3.3 and the phone don't work perfect, dropping network and data at random... in my case, i can say that my solution is to change the micro sim for another one in 128 K... here in Madrid (Spain) it's imposible to found a Microsim 128K from Orange, i decide to change the operator, this one have 128K microsim..

I'm still testing the Iphone 4s with this new operator, if i have some problem i will put here....

    Sorry for my English :-)

If I don't use my i4 for approx 15 min it loses data and network connection, sounds just like your problem. I have iOS 5.0.1. Have you solved your problem yet?

I just restored my iphone 4s to a previous 5.0.1 backup vesion and the phone is working fine now; it's been about an hour and it has not lost the signal yet. Previously it would lose the signal right away.
