Q: iPhone 4S dropping network and data at random

Hi,

I've been using an iPhone 4 on a Vodafone contract for the past 16 month and just bought an iPhone 4S direct from Apple. It arrived on Friday morning and I got it set up correctly as far as I can tell.

When I first turn it on, it works lovely and exactly as I would expect, able to make calls, send texts and access the internet via the cellular network. However, at what appears to be random, the network will disappear (no bars of signal) stopping me making calls and texts, but still allowing me to access the internet.  Sometimes, the Internet goes, but I can still make calls and texts.  Other times, everything is gone and I get "No Signal" where it normally says Vodafone UK.

So when trying to fix this problem after it's noticed, I try putting it into Airplane mode and back out.  The phone scans for a network and goes back to the same state as before I tried this fix. I have tried resetting network settings, but this doesn't change anything. The only thing that actually fixes it temporarily is turning the phone right off and back on again.

At this stage I assume this is a bug with the software, but I wondered if anyone else is experiencing anything like this? If no one is, I will take it up with Apple, but I don't really want to do that as I love the new phone so much!!

Cheers, Stuart

Well, from what I've seen this is not related to the 5.0.1 upgrade. From what I understand many had this problem prior to the upgrade - not on the Iphone 4 but rather on the Iphone 4s.

I'm not sure however, I upgraded to 5.0.1 just when I got the phone.

I've gone to great length and put lots of hours into this matter trying to figure out what's causing this problem. And as you can see in my earlier posts I've tried everything and have had extensive contact with my operator (Tele2) in this matter.

I finally caved in and returned my iPhone 4S to Tele2 and they sent it to Apple which in return sent me a new phone a week later with iOS 5.0 installed. And TADAAHH!, Everything worx like a charm.

Note, I have the same exakt microSIM, a new phone with supposedly same hardware but iOS 5.0 instead of 5.01 and making and receiving calls and messages now works like a charm.

This is my tip, return phone and get a new one with iOS 5.0 on. This saves you a lot of time and headache.

Conclusion It's not the choice of operator and not the microSIM that's causing this problems. It's either the hardware in the first iPhone 4S that was sent out to customers (like mine), the software, or a combination there of.

I'm having the same problem. The weird thing is that with a Spanish Movistar sim card the phone works perfectly, but with a Swedish Tele2 new card I just have a very expensive ipod touch... I had problems with 5.0 and they got really worse after updating to 5.01. There are considerable differences between the two cards (the blue one is movistar):

New USIM microsim making the phone work.  Note, I have a phone that also had problems prior 5.0.1. mostly related to battery.  And with 5.0.1. the phone was completely useless.

Been using the phone lightly now for 9 hours and battery is at 73% so it looks quite good.

Hi, could you specify the upper or the lower as to my vision both of them are rather blue. Mine is simillar to the upper sim (Telcel, Mexico) and it's not working properly in my iP4S16GB.

The upper one (dark blue) is a Spanish Movistar simcard, the lower one (light blue) is a Swedish Tele2 simcard

Hi Johan, to be honest, I don't know what type of old Sim I had. Just that it was a standard Sim that has been cut (microsim). Tele2 should be able to implement USIM's? I guess they could just disable some features of it to make it compatible...

This bug is definitley related to the SIM. Another user on this thread told tha Apple had told the carriers about this "feature" beforehand.

@Carraspín: the bottom card is the new USIM-type of cards (more advanced)

As an update: I had a regular 128k SIM that was cut to a uSIM. Everything was working except 3G data connection. My carrier did not have 128k uSIM at the moment so I received new 64k uSIM instead. HOwever, The problem remains. Now, also with dropped calls at random!!! How can you sell a 700$ premium phone wihch not yet can fulfill the basic funtionalities? I should have remained as a loyal Android user....

So we must wait for iOS update, change cut simcard or go send phone to service?

I am from Poland, T-Mobile and I don't believe that.... Today I receive new phone and I can't make a call to anybody!!!
