Q: iPhone 4S dropping network and data at random

Hi,

I've been using an iPhone 4 on a Vodafone contract for the past 16 month and just bought an iPhone 4S direct from Apple. It arrived on Friday morning and I got it set up correctly as far as I can tell.

When I first turn it on, it works lovely and exactly as I would expect, able to make calls, send texts and access the internet via the cellular network. However, at what appears to be random, the network will disappear (no bars of signal) stopping me making calls and texts, but still allowing me to access the internet.  Sometimes, the Internet goes, but I can still make calls and texts.  Other times, everything is gone and I get "No Signal" where it normally says Vodafone UK.

So when trying to fix this problem after it's noticed, I try putting it into Airplane mode and back out.  The phone scans for a network and goes back to the same state as before I tried this fix. I have tried resetting network settings, but this doesn't change anything. The only thing that actually fixes it temporarily is turning the phone right off and back on again.

At this stage I assume this is a bug with the software, but I wondered if anyone else is experiencing anything like this? If no one is, I will take it up with Apple, but I don't really want to do that as I love the new phone so much!!

Cheers, Stuart

I have exactly the same problem here in Poland. I deactivated my sim PIN as well manually set operator -Plus GSM. It seemed to help for a while but lasy evening phone started to drop the coverage couple of times a minute. When I woke up today - no coverage! Flight mode didn't work - I had to turn on and off the phone. Earlier I had called Apple phone line but the lady said she would search the web! Then she directed me to a service. Unfortunately I am travelling lately pretty much and I couldn't make it to service in their business hours do I sent them an e-mail but nobody even bothered to answer it - service iSpot in Stary Browar in Ponan. I will be able to go to a different service only on friday, just wander if they will be able od willing to help. All I know is that this is my first and last iPhone!

    Dear all,

I want to give you an update. But first of all I also want to highlight that Apple should put a few developers to extend the functionalities of this forum, it is really hard to follow up subjects and replies.

I bought one unlocked Iphone 4s 16gb in CA from At&t. I do travel a lot so currently Im in Turkey and using my Vodafone SIM. When I first inserted my newly cut uSIM (frim regular SIM) everything seemed to work exept the 3G connection. So as all of you, I tried the methods and proposals mentioned by you people (changing the settings for PIN, WI-FI on&off, upgrading from 64k to 128k uSIM). Since everything was working working smoothly, I thought it might be a carrier issue. So I contacted my carrier and asked them aobut the 3G APN connection settings for an Iphone. Originally (which I belive is programmed in the uSIM) was:

    APN: iphone

    Username: web

    Password: web

But instead, what should be set for Vodafone in Turkey is:

    APN: internet

    Username: vodafone

    Password: vodafone

After this change my 3G connection was active and I could experience regular 3G speeds!! My device is upgraded to 5.0.1. Hope this explanation helpes if you have had similar problems.

I've got similar problems with 1-year old iPhone 4, which I recently upgraded to 5.0.1. I had decent 3G connection in New York with AT&T and in Moscow, in international roaming - both with 3G voice and data. But once I dropped of the plane in Ukraine, I can only connect to UMTS (3G) voice with one carrier who serves this, but no 3G data. When I turn 3G off in the iPhone Settings, it doesn't connect to the carrier at all (keep searching with No Service messages at top bar).

I've sepnt already 4 days with AT&T international roaming support team, they put me through all kind of troubleshooting excersizes, and finalley opened trouble tickets, which is still not being reviewed.

Getting no help from AT&T and Apple. They create tricky bugs to keep us busy.

I got my iphone 4S 64GB UNLOCKED from Australia and I am living in Kazakhstan!

It had 5.0 IOS and HAD ALL the problems with battery and SIM card (INVALID SIM), I restored it to 5.0.1 with hope of fixing at least SIM failure, but it became even worse. So NOW I am forced to send iphone BACK to Australia??? ***???

And where is guaranty that they will not send me another scrap??? I payed too much for such a "phone" and I am not willing to spend another 100$ for postage to Australia! APPLE SEND ME NEW WORKING IPHONE FOR FREE!

No reply from APPLE more than 1 month already!!!! They have several discussion threads on their forum about SIM Failure and keep silence!

BTW I am using cheap NOKIA at the moment as I do not have another phone, my iphone just in my pocked as contact book and ipod. I will never buy iphone in the future!!!

Hi all disappointed 4s users. Look around 30 pages of comments of people complaining of 4s dropping network and not even a single comment from Apple. I guess they just don't care. Probably the only way is to give our phones back and demand money back. Stop wasting out time on finding the way of how to make a phone do the basics. To be able to make phone calls without thinking of the coverage -that's the way it is with all other phones in the world but not with iPhone 4s. Guess that is what makes it so special. I feel cheated do you?

Absolutely agree with you, witoldfrompoznan. Even if Apple decided that new sims can be used in ip4s it shouldn't mean that the old sims wouldn't be supported, as it's nonsense! When you get a new computer with usb3 e.g. you can use this port for any devices supporting USB 1-2. I gonna ask the money back for my useless iPhone4s. It's enough of me!

I totally agree with you, beacause I talked to tmobile today and they said, that apple wont be solving this problem at all and apple just gave tmobile permission to give everyone, who has trouble with calling, sms... like everyone here, new iphone..where will be ios 5.0...thats the only solution, which i think is quite disappointing for me..well i guess we have to satisfy with this..:)

    hi guys,

i recently bought a new iphone 4s factory unlocked. in order to avoid sim failures and invalid sim errors or No service errors, Each phone has to be unlocked by connecting it to the Itunes.

Kindly follow the below steps to avoid any SIM card conflicts

iPhone FULL Unlock - How it Works:

-Connect your iphone to itunes without any network sim inside and when connected click on the iphones name.

    - Click Restore install latest version of iTunes on your Pc or Mac or click check for updates

    - Let itunes Backup your phone and then Flash to the Latest Version.

    - Now disconnect phone and reconnect after 10 seconds.

    - Now Enter another network simcard that's not the same network its locked on to

    - Connect phone to iTunes with not accepted (not valid) simcard

    - Wait until iTunes detects the phone

    - iTunes will display (Congratulations, Your iPhone is now unlocked)

    - Phone Unlocked

    - just follow the instructions about activating the Iphone.

    and iphone is unlocked

NOTE : This is the only FULL LIFE TIME UNLOCK solution for Apple iPhone as the IMEI is registered as UNLOCKED in Apple database.

This solution should be used ONLY THOSE WHO BOUGHT FACTORY UNLOCKED iPHONE 4S.

Your phone will always be unlocked even after each new update of your phone firmware !

All reasons given like bad IMEI series, manufacturing defects etc blah blah are not logical as everything was tested before every sale.

So I upgraded my IPhone to 5.1 DP with help of this website: http://iosbetaactivation.com/ But problem with GSM is the same like before. After start I can make call first 3-4  mins. then it shows message call failed and restart GSM signal. So I must return my phone to Apple and buy something different
