Q: iPhone 4S dropping network and data at random

Hi,

I've been using an iPhone 4 on a Vodafone contract for the past 16 month and just bought an iPhone 4S direct from Apple. It arrived on Friday morning and I got it set up correctly as far as I can tell.

When I first turn it on, it works lovely and exactly as I would expect, able to make calls, send texts and access the internet via the cellular network. However, at what appears to be random, the network will disappear (no bars of signal) stopping me making calls and texts, but still allowing me to access the internet.  Sometimes, the Internet goes, but I can still make calls and texts.  Other times, everything is gone and I get "No Signal" where it normally says Vodafone UK.

So when trying to fix this problem after it's noticed, I try putting it into Airplane mode and back out.  The phone scans for a network and goes back to the same state as before I tried this fix. I have tried resetting network settings, but this doesn't change anything. The only thing that actually fixes it temporarily is turning the phone right off and back on again.

At this stage I assume this is a bug with the software, but I wondered if anyone else is experiencing anything like this? If no one is, I will take it up with Apple, but I don't really want to do that as I love the new phone so much!!

Cheers, Stuart

Totally agree!!!! Pleas let us know something... I can´t believe that you, Apple, doesn´t know about this situation... and if that is the case... do a little research!!!!

    Dear all,

(THIS CONCERNS MTC TOUCH CUSTOMERS IN LEBANON)

I've received an email with a solution to the problem; you have to update to the new iOS 5.0.1 firmware (9A406)!! It's been 1Hour and so far my iPHone 4S is working just fine. Please follow carefully the below instructions:

RUN A FULL BACK UP BEFORE DOING ANY OF THIS

    1. Download the new iOS 5.0.1 firmware (9A406) from the internet. (800MB)
    2. Connect your iPhone 4S to iTunes.
    3. Once connected, two options will show: ‘restore’ and ‘check for update’.
    4. Press down SHIFT and choose ‘check for update’. (if you click ‘check for update’ without pressing down SHIFT doesn’t work.)
    5. Select the new firmware (9A406). Note that the file should be renamed ‘iPhone4,1_5.0.1_9A406_Restore.ipsw’  (instead of ‘iPhone4,1_5.0.1_9A406_Restore.zip’), i.e. changing the file extension from ZIP to IPSW. iTunes will now work alone and update your iPhone 4S.
A full back up is recommended before firmware upgrade.

    HOPE THIS HELPS

    hello everyone,

i had the same issue, very frustrating...I tried everything on the web to resolve this, everything...no luck. I resulted to the idea to just downgrade to ios5.0, which to my surprise opened anoher pandoras box and ended up as not possible...

Actuallly with the ios 5.0.1 the 5 version it was hapenning sporadically, but woth the 6 version it was constantly off, i literraly could not use the phone, so i started to use the old 3g iphone...and that worked with the same card just fine, some people were saying to get the sim replaced, so i did that...

I realized that i had smart sim 64E and got it replaced with smart sim 128a. Since the exchange my phone is working just fine on ios 5.0.1 no drops nothing. So i am happy, at least so far, touch wood and it is a week...

for me the biggest dissapointment apple yet...this caused me a lot of rubbish time...

so what I wanted to say is that it is apparently sim card issue, not phone issue, that is probably why is apple silent about this...

anyway, upgrading the software to the new 5.0.1 resolves nothing about the sim drops, in fact it makes it even worse. nor all the silly step by step guides do this and that three times change the pin...and put in airplane mode and back...as I said silly.

So first of all get a 128 k-whatever that is smart sim, and then update the phone, and if you're still not lucky, then my advise is of no use to you, sorry...

so to avoid this stick to ios 5.0, or get a smart sim 128k...

    marry Christmas

Rule of thumbs, 3 people i know WILL NOT buy iphone after my monologue about "high quality" apple iphone and thinking about competitors, 2 people wanted iphone for new year now they got galaxy s2, so lets see how many people switch from apple, give it 3 or more months. i am it manager in a big company and people listen carefully what i say about tech stuff, and i have nothing good to say about iphone.
