Q: iPhone 4S dropping network and data at random

Hi,

I've been using an iPhone 4 on a Vodafone contract for the past 16 month and just bought an iPhone 4S direct from Apple. It arrived on Friday morning and I got it set up correctly as far as I can tell.

When I first turn it on, it works lovely and exactly as I would expect, able to make calls, send texts and access the internet via the cellular network. However, at what appears to be random, the network will disappear (no bars of signal) stopping me making calls and texts, but still allowing me to access the internet.  Sometimes, the Internet goes, but I can still make calls and texts.  Other times, everything is gone and I get "No Signal" where it normally says Vodafone UK.

So when trying to fix this problem after it's noticed, I try putting it into Airplane mode and back out.  The phone scans for a network and goes back to the same state as before I tried this fix. I have tried resetting network settings, but this doesn't change anything. The only thing that actually fixes it temporarily is turning the phone right off and back on again.

At this stage I assume this is a bug with the software, but I wondered if anyone else is experiencing anything like this? If no one is, I will take it up with Apple, but I don't really want to do that as I love the new phone so much!!

Cheers, Stuart

    Hi unicohijo,

My phone was with the 5.0 version in late October. In mid November I did an update over the air with the 5.0.1 9A405 and the problem started to appear (not so frequently as now). By the beginning of December I did an update to 5.0.1 9A406 with no good results and these days the problem get it worst, not even an hour connected to the carrier.

    Greetings

For me the problem arises whenever i try to send a text or make a call. Most of the times my phone shows full bars but when i try to text someone or call, the network bars drop - switches to searching - no service - bars come back ! Now when i try resending the text or making a call it goes thru ! the phone works fine approx for 5 mins post that the cycle repeats !

I had notice that too, but I think those full bars you see are fake (the phone stuck in the last signal state). Have you ever tried to dial your iPhone number to see if is really working? I had and it sends me to the voicemail.

I don't know if that is the software or hardware problem. But in ios 5 my 4s works well. In 5.0.1 it didn't work with any sim except the one of my mother. It is a sim with big yellow chip. I tried another one with big chip but it did not work. I lended it to my mother and used the 4.

I think Iam lucky because my nearly 1000$ phone can make call with a sim. Many others cannot do it.

Apple should do sth more agrressive. I could not see any value from it since Steve went away.

Mine had 3g connectivity issues for three months now. Tried 5.0.1 and latest build of 5.0.1

and it got worse. Now I'm experiencing complete network dropping from

my carrier. A popup shows the connection being lost. It's happening now

5 to 10 times a day at least. Very frustrating losing signal randomly. I'm waiting

next update to see if problems are solver if not i will ask for a replacement at my local Apple Store.

    hi Venkat

Hoping you could help me out a little here.

I am from India too and on Airtel as well

Currently using the Mini-cut Out Sim, the first pic that youve attached and having a lot of problems.

Just wanted to tknow how did you get Airtel to give you the Sim shown in the third pic that works and also as in what did you have to say to them?

Also is it still working well?

    Thanks for the help

    Appreciate it

    Ratik
