Q: iPhone 4S dropping network and data at random

Hi,

I've been using an iPhone 4 on a Vodafone contract for the past 16 month and just bought an iPhone 4S direct from Apple. It arrived on Friday morning and I got it set up correctly as far as I can tell.

When I first turn it on, it works lovely and exactly as I would expect, able to make calls, send texts and access the internet via the cellular network. However, at what appears to be random, the network will disappear (no bars of signal) stopping me making calls and texts, but still allowing me to access the internet.  Sometimes, the Internet goes, but I can still make calls and texts.  Other times, everything is gone and I get "No Signal" where it normally says Vodafone UK.

So when trying to fix this problem after it's noticed, I try putting it into Airplane mode and back out.  The phone scans for a network and goes back to the same state as before I tried this fix. I have tried resetting network settings, but this doesn't change anything. The only thing that actually fixes it temporarily is turning the phone right off and back on again.

At this stage I assume this is a bug with the software, but I wondered if anyone else is experiencing anything like this? If no one is, I will take it up with Apple, but I don't really want to do that as I love the new phone so much!!

Cheers, Stuart

I've been having the problem for a week or so, after upgrading to 5.0.1. Have installed 5.1b and now disabled 3G and phone seems to work but why oh why is this being allowed to continue?

    Hi all,

I installed the 5.1 beta3 update trying and hoping this will fix my iphone 4s problem of not being able to connect or pick up the GSM network. Now my iphone shows that I have a full signal but I can't make any calls because it always comes back with a failed call and when somebody tries to call me they get the answer that i'm out of service.

Does any one have an answer or a solution to this problem? Please advice.

    Thank you.

I have installed beta3, disable 3g and it works fine for a week. And i think, that even if i enable 3 g it will be working good. Problem solved for me, after 3 months of using iphone without internet.

I've noticed that when u call somone with a prefix exp. +38163(Serbia) or +38164(Serbia) or +3162(Netherland) instead of calling without prefixes than phone will not bug or debug whatever. People have called me normaly from yesterday and I called ppl without problems calling them without prefix on cell or home phone. I got twice network lost and also one interesting thing, when I put my 4s on charger and woke up after 6-7 hours it was written sim failure.

Update on my iPhone 4 (not 4s):

Been about a week now and so far have not experienced the searching for signal problem.  It was searching about every 10 seconds.   The fix was to do a restore to factory settings in iTunes then do a restore.  (of course do a backup/sync before doing anything)

I already had the SIM PIN off and still get the same problem, 80% of the time, I only need to go offline on airplane mode, still 20% of the time I need to go through complete off/on reset cycle.

I nailed the problem to when I move from 3G to GPRS (2G) coverage, and not with all operators, as I tried different ones, also not all phones suffer from this problem, so swapping the phone might help!

I installed beta3 and that helped. I finally can use my 4s not as an ipod touch but as a phone. BUT as soon as i turn the 3g ON the problems comes back in that very moment. Does anyone experiencing that?

P.S I don't hava an option of choosing carrier anymore (i just don't have that link in menu). Any solutions?

Installing beta versions or disabling features like 3G should never be considered as a solution for anyone.

By the way my 3 phones are on 9A406 and still I get call failed.

Every single day that passes by I'm more and more impressed with the worst mobile Os I've ever used in my life. Since my very first mobile phone (a Motorola Startac) none of my devices (and I've had plenty of them) have dropped calls so badly. What's more I wonder if any of them ever did.

Apple and Tim Cook on it's behalf should be incredibly ashamed of this situation. We are paying ourself their lousy software (and hardware) engineering skills with every phone call we have to put back (and pay) everytime it cuts. Not to mention how ridiculous it is to tell someone for the second or third time in a conversation that you are sorry for the cuts.

iPhone 4 had antena issues... iPhone 4s directly cuts your calls...I'm eager to see what's next. I lack imagination to wonder how the next iPhone 5 is going to ruin our calls in the future.

Can anyone imagine buying a TV that resets every 10 minutes? Can anyone imagine millions of people still buying it... and not reading any mayor warnning on the media... for months now?

    This is crazy.

There is nothing we can do, is there?

Apple wont listen anyway, they really do not care!!!

And stop "selling cheap solutions" by

    • turning this on
    • turning that off
    • hold in those two buttons
    • replace your sim for the 17'th time
    • updating, restoring and that A06 piece of crap
    • Its time wasted, IT WONT HELP!!!

    I'll rahter have a motorola from 1994.

Anyone up 2 get together and make a new iPhone 4S commercial (youtube)

Title: "this is what you can use your iPhone to"

You can throw the iPhone 4S like 10 yards, vow! what a device

    I've had enaugh!

Nice to know that I'm not the only one with this problem.

The problem started when I updated to 5.0.1.

Now I can't hardly make a call or receive a call.

    It's getting embarrassing.

    Please fix this.

My iPhone 4s came with 9A406 and I had nothing but problems. 5 Days ago, installed 9A405 and all is well.

    Perhaps you should try it.

I got this no service problem yesterday then I tried reinserting the sim (there is no problem with my sim because it is works fine with other phones) then everything worked fine except that i am unable to make calls but able to recive calls and messages also the cellular data works fine and I bought my iPhone on JAN 2nd.It is on 9A405 when I got this problem and I tried everything like resetting network settings, reinserting the sim card, turning off the sim pin, turning the airplane mode off and on and I also tried Erase all content and settings but nothing worked.then I restored my firmware from 9A405 to 9A406.At first the problem continued but after 5 minutes after some try's it worked fine..:)

you need to restore the phone and turn off MMS until Apple releases an update.

Someone with a CDMA Android phone is trying to send you MMS, and it's causing Comm Center to crash.
