Q: iPhone 4S dropping network and data at random

Hi,

I've been using an iPhone 4 on a Vodafone contract for the past 16 month and just bought an iPhone 4S direct from Apple. It arrived on Friday morning and I got it set up correctly as far as I can tell.

When I first turn it on, it works lovely and exactly as I would expect, able to make calls, send texts and access the internet via the cellular network. However, at what appears to be random, the network will disappear (no bars of signal) stopping me making calls and texts, but still allowing me to access the internet.  Sometimes, the Internet goes, but I can still make calls and texts.  Other times, everything is gone and I get "No Signal" where it normally says Vodafone UK.

So when trying to fix this problem after it's noticed, I try putting it into Airplane mode and back out.  The phone scans for a network and goes back to the same state as before I tried this fix. I have tried resetting network settings, but this doesn't change anything. The only thing that actually fixes it temporarily is turning the phone right off and back on again.

At this stage I assume this is a bug with the software, but I wondered if anyone else is experiencing anything like this? If no one is, I will take it up with Apple, but I don't really want to do that as I love the new phone so much!!

Cheers, Stuart

    hello,

wow!!!that is way too much info.lol.i did not mean to go that far mate.

my model is MD235CS,that is what i tought,i believe its the same model for everyone purchacing in central europe...,

orher info good to compare is modem firmware, which in my case is 1.0.14...

that is where i am going with all this, when people go for a replacement, maybe they get the same model, but the firmware is downgraded if identified by apple as the source of the problem...or some other instance...

so i am good now without drops 100% performance and i am running

    iphone 4s 16gb black

    MD235CS - model no

    1.0.14 - modem firmware

    ios 5.0.1 (9A406)

    O2 svk smart sim 128a

prior to the sim exchange i was on

    O2 svk smart sim 64e

rest the same and i had

!!!constantly!!! no sim/sim failure/out of reach. no phone only ipod basically

so as it sounds to me not all models play nice with all carriers...sad but true...

    Hi,

I use to get the same problems as every1 here. Im from Slovakia but now living in Scotland. My provider is Orange (Slovakia ) and O2 (UK). I did swap my cutted card for a new original 3G mini sim 128k (Orange Slovakia) and that was my solution. I did same here in Scotland but they provide only 64k. Phone is working fine in UK,just very sometimes drop the network.

    Baterry drainage is other problem.

@jurajpe, if possible, please can you contact me on facebook or skype,i would like to speak about something. You will find me as Vladi Mokos. Thank you

And I hope for every1, the PROPER UPDATE will be available soon!!!!!!!!!

I have to say I find the lack of progress on this a big black mark on apple. This is clearly a major shortcoming on the offer. No one could be happy with the battery life on the new 4s and for me personally it is the first time I be had to re assess my purchase of an apple product.

If apple was a car manufacturer there would have been a re call . As it is I feel I have wasted 500 bucks on a substandard device.

Here is Europe the 4 s is getting a very bad name - apple will suffer reputational damage because of this . They need to come out publicly and say what they are going to do

    Occupy Cupertino I say

I have the some problem, or a similar one: my phone sometimes "forgets" to re-connect to the 3G network from the WiFi or from the GPRS, loses the signal in areas where others (with other phones and/or networks) have a good signal strength and then again "forgets" to find my carrier (Movistar, Spain)... the only way to fix it is going in airplane mode, wait about 10 seconds and back to normal mode.

Messrs at Apple, please, fix this (and the echo problem as well).

My phone has been acting up since the last two weeks with this "Searching..." mode thing.  It's trying to search for a network connection once it does, it fails again and goes the "Searching..." mode again! THIS HAPPENS ALL DAY LONG WITH THE PHONE AND IT DRAINS MY BATTERY SO QUICKLY!!! This is very frustrating because when this happens I can't receive/send text messages or even receive/make phone calls and not alone even use the Internet.  It's not the the sim card that is having the issue it's the phone itself, because I have been to my carrier to swap out a new sim card and it does the same thing.  This is the 3rd phone that Apple changed out to attempt to fix the problem.  The same problem occurs after about 30 mins leaving the store.  I have tried to reset all Factory setting, Apple tried to reinstall the updated software and still nothing works!!!!!! I called my carrier many times to check on any network towers failures in the area and everything seems to be fine.  My carrier advised me to take the phone back to Apple and she mentioned that Apple is very aware this is a phone issue and not a network issue.  I am sick of going back and forth between Apple and my carrier and it's a waste of my time!  I am paying for a service I can't even use and this *****!  I wished I never upgrade to the IPhone 4S.  If anyone else is having this problem please share!!!!

USA, AT&T, 4S 16GB. After living with the slow and/or nonexistent data for a week or so, I happened to walk past an Aple store. Made a Genius bar appointment, shopped a bit, then met with the tech support. He took my phone to their diagnostic back room for about 15 minutes, then came back and said he'd be giving me a brand new phone. I was elated. Fast forward to now, and the new phone is experiencing the same issues. Just to ensure it wasn't the network, I asked my coworker who is also on AT&T run a speed test. He was getting around 3 ms, and I couldn't even pull up the page. He has a Galaxy II, FYI.

I have four bars and the 3G icon is lit, but I get zero data. I reboot, I manually shut down apps, I switch to airplane mode and back, I reseat the SIM card... nothing.

My shiny iPhone 4S is a freaking brick. I hate it. This is my third and likely LAST iPhone. I don't know if it's AT&T or Apple, but neither will claim to even acknowledge there's a problem. So I'm through.

Wow I didn't know that this was such a huge problem until now.

    I have a 4S 64GB on IOS 5.0.

I bought it just when it was realesed in october last year, had problem after the first week.

I called 3 support in sweden where i bought it from, they said I have to come to the 3 store and send to repair.

(3 = the carrier name in sweden. www.tre.se).

did it, got a new 4S 64GB on IOS 5.0.(9A334) model MD258B modemfirmware 1.0.11. they didn't give me any explanation of what was wrong with the one I sent in. I was just happy that I had a new phone.

I got same problem the first week after that with this one also.

My girlfriend has the exact same model and IOS but in white, she had no problem until about 3 weeks ago, she has the same problem as me now.

    The problems are:

    1:No service

2:Full reception with 3G logo, but now mobile data connection.

3: Go into my garage where the reception gets lost, drive out my car and get  full reception and 3G logo aswell but when checking emails, sending Imessage or something internet related NO ******* MOBILE DATA CONNECTION, sorry for the hard language.

4: surfing on the phone and lalala having a good time, the when I want to check a nother page on safari it just keeps searching and searching and nothing happends, still full reception and 3G logol. The mobile data just died all of the sudden.

I have had many ideas of what it could be that kills the internet connection (mobile data connection).

1: Simcard problem, but I have tried changing 2 times, no good result. (Don't know about the simcard beeing 64 or 128, it doesnt say on the big card, havent checked further on it)

    2: IOS issue?

3: Dropping the phone making it weak somehow, My girlfirends phone started to act strange after that.

4:When the promo of the new 4S, they said it would workd all over the world bla bla bla. It's a longshot but it could a problem with the ios trying to change carrier from

    • UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz);
      GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
    • CDMA EV-DO Rev. A (800, 1900 MHz)4

    don't judge me, just speculating.

    4: Something else.

I was wounduring if a update to ios 5.01 would solve this, but after so many people here complaining about it, I'll thing I'll wait and se what happends i another ios update.

Don't know the serial number or nothing on the first modell because I got a new phone when I send it to the phone store for repair.

Feel like putting the phone on the ground and smash it to pieces so many times.

This is really a SHAME from the smartphone that SUPPOSED to be the BEST and MOST ADVANCE ONE on the market.

I have to reset it at LEAST 5 times a day; Reasons:

    - No Service

    - No Sim Card

    - Sim Card Failure

    - Searching

    - Battery dropped in 3 hours.

    - Call failed over and over again

I changed the sim 3 times, I did the upgraded that APPLE suggest (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4148), but absolutely NOTHING change.

    This is really annoying

I bought the Iphone 4S after owning for almost 3 years an Iphone 3GS, that worked PERFECT all the time.

If I know something for sure, is that my next SmartPhone will not be an iPhone again.

You people from apple have to know a basic rule for business: 1 disappointed costumer equals to lose 4 potentials buyers. So far, i guess you have loose millions!

    My best regards from Chile

    Update:

Tried to switch off sim pin, now the phone works so far.

    Still on ios 5.0

Will update if it will change.

Come on man! It aint solve the problem! I know what I m talking about! Anything but the exchange of your phone might solve it!

I'd tried all the "home-made" sollutions what you gyus suggested, nothing helped until I had my phone exchanged! Now I believe it is hardware problem rather that software!

Come on guys, dont be pathetic! Apple skrewed up on this one!
