Q: iPhone 4S dropping network and data at random

Hi,

I've been using an iPhone 4 on a Vodafone contract for the past 16 month and just bought an iPhone 4S direct from Apple. It arrived on Friday morning and I got it set up correctly as far as I can tell.

When I first turn it on, it works lovely and exactly as I would expect, able to make calls, send texts and access the internet via the cellular network. However, at what appears to be random, the network will disappear (no bars of signal) stopping me making calls and texts, but still allowing me to access the internet.  Sometimes, the Internet goes, but I can still make calls and texts.  Other times, everything is gone and I get "No Signal" where it normally says Vodafone UK.

So when trying to fix this problem after it's noticed, I try putting it into Airplane mode and back out.  The phone scans for a network and goes back to the same state as before I tried this fix. I have tried resetting network settings, but this doesn't change anything. The only thing that actually fixes it temporarily is turning the phone right off and back on again.

At this stage I assume this is a bug with the software, but I wondered if anyone else is experiencing anything like this? If no one is, I will take it up with Apple, but I don't really want to do that as I love the new phone so much!!

Cheers, Stuart

Last Wednesday I took my black 16 GB iPhone 4S to my carrier (Telcel) because of this same issue, they told me that they will be sending it to apple so they could take care of my issue and that my phone should've be back within 45 days! But today they called me in order for me to pick it up. Apple sent me a new one with iOS 5.0 and my carrier told me not to update it to 5.0.1 until Apple gives a fix to the issue.

So far no bugs and no network neither data dropping! As a curious fact the manufacture data is from October! It seems new but there's a chance that it's refurbished?

I'm an IT administrator who recently (Nov 2011) made the foolish decision of deploying iPhones as the standard mobile device for our employees.

We have 30 iPhone 4S devices out in the field (all over the UK) on Vodafone UK and so far I am aware of 12 of them having the problem where at least 3 out of 4 calls are dropped within 5 minutes.

As with previous posters, the phones often have full signal when the call fails, then 10 seconds after the call has failed it drops from full signal to "No Service", then "Searching" and then back to full signal.

This is a huge issue for our employees who are often on the phone to customers, potential customers, clients, closing deals, etc when this happens. They then have to call back and explain that they have a crappy iPhone 4S (yes Apple, ignoring this issue is only hurting your reputation) which is why they keep getting disconnected.

We have swapped SIM cards, turned off SIM PIN, reset network settings, got new iPhones, turned off 3G, turned off Wi-Fi, reset the phones etc and none seem to have provided us with a permenent solution. Besides, why should we have to disable *any* of these features just to make a call; Apple tell us this is the best iPhone ever! This is like buying a new car and then finding out that you have to disable the CD player to get the breaks to work!

I took this issue to a genius bar at a local Apple store and the guy said that because of the number of devices involved they would have to get the corporate team to contact me. This was over 2 weeks ago now and I have heard nothing yet. Very disappointing.

Needless to say, I will not be purchasing any Apple products for our company ever again, especially something as vital as mobile phones. Back to Windows Phone devices (we used HTC and LG previously) for our employees I think, as they worked flawlessly.

Personally I think that iPhones have been getting worse and worse with every new device. I have had a 3G, 4 and 4S as my personal phone and I thought the 3G was great, the 4 was poor (because of the antenna issue) and the 4S is terrible (for this issue and the fact that the battery absolutely appalling). I'm in a contract for another 15 months but as soon as I can I'm jumping ship to another brand...and I'm taking about 30 business users with me.

I have the same problems here in Brazil,I already changed my sim 3 times and they don't go away.

The update for the iOs 5.0.1 (9A406) version also didn't work for me.

    Can I cry?

I did something based in a lot of "home made"solution i founded on google, and at least for me have worked fine for 3 days (a record!!!!!!) so far.

    1.- Backup your iPhone info

2.- Enter in DFU mode pressing power and home button togehter for 10 seconds and then drop the power button without drop the home button for another 10 seconds. That will reset your iphone

3.- Take off the sim and put a thin piece of scotch (1,5 mm wide)  in the golden part of the SIM that touch the sim tray as seen in the picture (http://cdn.iphonehacks.com/images/10-Jun/iphone4-sim.jpg)

    4.- Insert the SIM

5.- Restore your iphone with iTunes

I haven't had no more problems with the signal, or PIN failures for 3 days so far, considering that before doing this shameful process I had to turn off and on my phone at least 10 times a day.

I will wait for the next iPhone firmware and I will take the scotch away from the SIM. If i started with problems again at least I will be able to differentiate if the problem was a hardware problem or a Firmware problem, and obviously, my next phone will be a Samsumg or nokia or whatever sh*** BUT iPhone.

    Hope this help you guys!

    1.- 9A405

2.- Transparent 3M scotch film. The less wide possible to isolate the golden part of the SIM from the SIM tray (1.5 mm aprox).

In the picture is the part of the sim where you have to stick the 3m scotch film.

Hope you have the same luck I had.

Hey Loyo can u tell me the settings that u have(automatic configuration, celular data, imessage etc.) and u're saying the transparent 3M scotch film, it this spesific or I can use whatever tape ?!?!?

I'll see till tomorow morning, but I just now tried to send the message and have a call but again I got failed call and message too.

    Thanks

    N1nja:

Settings: Cellular data on, wifi on, ask to join wifi off, iMessage on, mail sync with exchange (google account). SIM PIN off.

Concerning the tape, I suppose you can use whichever tape you have at hand, but I used scotch because the grossor is thinner and use less space in the SIM TRAY. I don't have to be "only 3M scotch tape".

So far now, the signal dropped down once and NO SIM card failures, which is waaaay too good as it was before the "iPhone 4S Loyo's restoration method" :D
