Q: iPhone 4S dropping network and data at random

Hi,

I've been using an iPhone 4 on a Vodafone contract for the past 16 month and just bought an iPhone 4S direct from Apple. It arrived on Friday morning and I got it set up correctly as far as I can tell.

When I first turn it on, it works lovely and exactly as I would expect, able to make calls, send texts and access the internet via the cellular network. However, at what appears to be random, the network will disappear (no bars of signal) stopping me making calls and texts, but still allowing me to access the internet.  Sometimes, the Internet goes, but I can still make calls and texts.  Other times, everything is gone and I get "No Signal" where it normally says Vodafone UK.

So when trying to fix this problem after it's noticed, I try putting it into Airplane mode and back out.  The phone scans for a network and goes back to the same state as before I tried this fix. I have tried resetting network settings, but this doesn't change anything. The only thing that actually fixes it temporarily is turning the phone right off and back on again.

At this stage I assume this is a bug with the software, but I wondered if anyone else is experiencing anything like this? If no one is, I will take it up with Apple, but I don't really want to do that as I love the new phone so much!!

Cheers, Stuart

    You are from the netherlands?
If so, which provider do you have?
Has the new iPhone the 5.0 software on it or the 5.0.1?

This morning the SIM CARD Failure shows again in the screen.

I'll give to apple the chance for the new update of the iOS to see if the problem persists or not. Is the last chance before send my phone to the service.

Bad news again as I can see Loyo, Im sorry man.

I got information that I can exchange my phone, my friend is going soon to Germany, Munich and he will try there to return the phone and take the new one. As it seems and I have a big research reading and reading, I was convinced that it was a software, still I am, because nobody complained when 5.0 was present. But, now Im thinking that this is a hardware issue and if Apple as Im been told and as I can see from some of the postes like Kamill's then I'll try to get a new one. I hope that it's not a hardware issue, Im more in to the core of a new update 5.0.1 >>> something stinks here.

    Cheers

Just a question : as the firmware 5.0.0 seems to not disturb the iPhone 4S, is it possible to downgrade the iOs 5.0.1 to 5.0.0 with the file iPhone4,1_5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw ?

Your SIM card may have been fried by the iOS 5.0.1 update. If you can get a new one, try following the guide here for fixing the signal issues on the iPhone 4s. It has worked for many people.

Don't assume if u're not sure. There is no fried sims or whatever. I have to quote this: "It has worked for many people." quote from the website that u gave the link: "Step 4) Upgrading to iOS 5.0.1 may have actually fried your SIM card. Try and get a new micro sim from AT&T by going into the store and asking them to test your SIM card. This has worked for a small percentage of people."

Im sorry if Im rude or something but Im fed up with the people who is writing noncensence, I feel after all this reading, searching exploring, I can make a better iOS.

So please don't give us solution which are totaly incomponent or already seen and heard.

    Cheers

BTW: No solution yet from me, Im trying one thing, I'll update !!

I have no idea what you are trying to say. I found a relevent article that I thought people could try and use to solve this problem. Your response makes no sense and I don't want to start anything here. So sorry for not providing you with a super amazing solution that probably doesn't exist, I was simply trying to help people out. Next time, when I find a helpful article, I won't post it for fear of being yelled at by people like you.

    Dear n1nja,

Next time, please learn how to use proper English. I understand you're angry, but you sound about as intelligent as a four-year-old in your post. Furthermore, it's not markymark8's fault that his solution didn't work for you. Don't flame him for trying to help you and other users like me.

Sorry guys I'm frustrated and messed up, therefore my posts are so confused and sarcastic and not quite understandble

Once again Im sorry. Anyways I have to say that this is my first time and I bought my 4s 2-3 weeks ago, as I was saying this is the first time that phone is working I didn't have signal drop or bug in outgoing calls or messages.

Nevertheless I think that time & date solve my problem, for NOW. Will see

    Here is my combination:

Usefull link, obviously the guy is well educated with apple eq.

    http://www.alvinpoh.com/cant-call-out-with-the-iphone-fix-to-the-call-failed-pro blem-with-iphone/

Trust me ppl I master the issues, reading days and nights, changing all kinds of combination, dying to solve the problem and I'm still sceptic about it, I'll see in the morning.

Anyways the combination that worked for me for the first time and I got my 4s 2 weeks ago, not a brand new but used and used normaly with another carrier micro sim.

Before everything I put the tape really slim one on the part of the card holder where micro sim chip is touching the metal construction of the microsim card holder. I saw that from one of the guys experincing same issues on apple support site.

    iPhone 4S 32 gb black

firmware 9A406 >> downloaded and updateded from iTunes

Settings > General > Date and Time > Set automaticly is OFF ( u will notice here and also when u press clock and this is for new not back up iPhones so there's no restore mode, a fresh copy and begining of using the phone, so when u press clock u will see that u have time in Cupertino, u will also see that maybe not maybe yes when u go to date and time that u have time zone and if u have Cupertion or some other city then yours then u will not be able to have outgoing calls).

Then u have caller ID, waiting and forwarding, caller ID should be turned on, those other 2 off and u have to check also if u can see your own number showing in Settings > Phone)

Settings  > General > Network > Celular Data ( this option is free of choice) I personaly turned it off, cause I don't have any internet plan with my carrier only calls and sms so I swtiched it off. I don't think that this can affect on connection and signal. It's simply a bug in a software. You can also check that when u go to Settings >> General >> ABout >> Diagnostic & Usage data >> here u gonna see alot of shiite happening

Settings >> Message >> iMessage off ( this is not necessary specialy for people from US, this option is desired to be turned off in Europe)

Settings >> WiFi >> turn off the ask to join networks ( this is for the ppl who have problem with wifi)

Settings >> Carrier >> Automatic ON ( if u put manual and then pick up the carrier which is yours, the software again will be mixing up with other carriers specialy if he's using some data to overcome to low signal or bad network, the phone will actualy use info from another carrier and continue to work on his own from the sim card.)

I think this is about it, the combination that works for me as it seems. Like I sad I'll update again and tell u about the sim card failure and no device and bla bla in the morning when I go to sleep so as iPhone(maybe he's having nightmares )))

I don't want to be subjective so I'll wait for tomorow and when I start to change my location. Im at home and my iPhone is working fine and Im saying this again for the first time without buging outgoing calls and messeges. Time and date solved my problem for now.

Good luck to you all !!!
    Cheers
