Q: iPhone 4S dropping network and data at random

Hi,

I've been using an iPhone 4 on a Vodafone contract for the past 16 month and just bought an iPhone 4S direct from Apple. It arrived on Friday morning and I got it set up correctly as far as I can tell.

When I first turn it on, it works lovely and exactly as I would expect, able to make calls, send texts and access the internet via the cellular network. However, at what appears to be random, the network will disappear (no bars of signal) stopping me making calls and texts, but still allowing me to access the internet.  Sometimes, the Internet goes, but I can still make calls and texts.  Other times, everything is gone and I get "No Signal" where it normally says Vodafone UK.

So when trying to fix this problem after it's noticed, I try putting it into Airplane mode and back out.  The phone scans for a network and goes back to the same state as before I tried this fix. I have tried resetting network settings, but this doesn't change anything. The only thing that actually fixes it temporarily is turning the phone right off and back on again.

At this stage I assume this is a bug with the software, but I wondered if anyone else is experiencing anything like this? If no one is, I will take it up with Apple, but I don't really want to do that as I love the new phone so much!!

Cheers, Stuart

maybe iPhone = "I can't phone" for me right now. I wasted 3 weeks after upgrading my 4s to ios 5.0.1 9A405 and than 5.0.1 9A406 to finding how to fixing that, but nothing like that exists. Everything was fine with 5.0 9A334 (i think so). Now, i'm using a phone which can't phone and send message. And...unfortunately, i took 2 iphone4s on that day.

If ios 5.1 final can't solve this problem, i will think about a android or windows phone.

    Hello!!

After reading all replies in the discussion, I noticed no one from Spain is telling about the same problem here with Telefonica (Movistar). We get same fails like "Call Failed" or iPhone showing full coverage when not entirely true, etc... Although, I think no one mentioned a possible indicator to the draining battery problem, which is Usage statistics. In my case, when the iPhone starts draining dramatically the battery, the "Usage" and "Standby" times always show the same time and obviously it's nothing like that. So, anyone noticed that? Or maybe that's another unrelated trouble?

    Thanks everyone!!

Yes i ve noticed it in my prvs phone.

Now with the second phone im about 5H20 of use and 1D2h standby with still 19%of battery.

Its too preety to be true, but so far 0 problems

    edit:

obviosuly this phone seems to be 3x better than last one: verry correct quality of voice in call, better audio quality with 0 strange noise and even louder volume, push work verry correctly so far its very nice

Thanks KAMiLL!! So now with your new phone, Is it working everything fine? Including Call failed problem? So you would say the battery usage time problem is related with the Call failing right?

    Thanks again!!

    Hi guys,

I take the opportunity offered by "trick5" to continue my experience with firmware 5.0.1 (9A405 and 9A406) and iphone 4S after Apple Store replacing the first iphone to dropping network after update.

I live in Italy and my carrier is WIND.

As I told you, the issue of dropping networks are no longer occurred with new iphone, but the phone battery went down dramatically without making calls without using mail or the Internet.

In the standby mode , the duration was 6.5 hours with the following switched mode:

    WiFi: ON

    localizzation: ON

    cellular data networks: ON

(the same that i use as shop the first one iphone).

The iphone became hot too !!!

With these premises are returned to the Apple Store and they replaced the phone again.

    3th Iphone 4S -

Also the third telephone with the same mode has a duration of battery was about 6 - 6.5 hours.

At this point I run the test, with the same configuration also on two other iphone 4S who had not the problem of the fall of signal: Even the two iphone (firmware 5.0.1 9A406) have a dramatic drop of the battery.

I have observed that simultaneously with the decrease of the battery, the phone looks hot, as if it were always in use.

I observed that in the settings, general, info, and diagnostic use, there are continuous connection to the telephone network for data exchange.

At this point I simply disabled: cellular data networks, and the battery life is approximately 34 hours of standby time.

I observed that in the settings, general, info, and diagnostic use, there are continuous questions to the telephone network for data exchange.

At this point I simply disabled: cellular data networks, and the battery life is approximately 34 hours of standby time.

It is clear, in my opinion, that this firmware cause, depending on the model of the iPhone 4S, at least three types of problems:

    1) dropping network

    2) dramatic battery reduction.

    3) accidental downloaded mail deleting

    4) accidental APN deleting.

At the time that active cellular data networks manually each time I need it and the battery dua about 24-26 hours.

I hope that the new firmware restore at least the same condition of 5.0.

    regards

Hello! I had the same prolem with my 4s after i updated to 5.0.1 the problems started to show, that same day i went to my carrier (Telcel, Mexico) and that same day they gave me a new iphone4s (seed stock) with the 501 Preinstaled, i recommend to everybody to stop finding the solution to this and go to your carrier and ask for a phone swap, its the easiest way to fix this problem.

Got new iPhone from service. Seems to work fine so far now. My advice is to stop tinkering with workarounds and instead of that send phone to service and demand new phone.

    Hello!!

I have the fear that new iphone will still be old stock from 2011. It seems like the new stock from this year is working fine so far, right? I already got a swap, is there a limit for swapping? New iphones come to Spain from the netherlands stock, so is there anyone who got recently a new 2012 iphone from the Netherlands apple care?

    Thanks!
