Verizon FIOS and Airport Extreme Routers

I am about to get verizon fios installed and would like to get some guidance on compatibility with my existing apple network. For instance:

1) must i use the verizon router or can i use my existing airport extreme router

2) is the verizon router analogous to a cable modem as is my current comcast setup

3) does the network setup require any software patching. In one article i read that you could only setup the network with a windows based machine, then once setup you can use the apple configuration tools, which made no sense to me

4) I also have a time capsule that i use for backup and network extension...will that work?

5) are ther any hidden issues that verizon marketing obscures regarding apple networking compatibility.

appreciate any help and guidance I can get
