SIRI forgets relationships

Dear community,

when I train SIRI about my relationships, eg. "Anne is my mother", she confirms that she has found "Anne" and has added it to my relationships. When I log in to icloud and check my contact details, I see that "Anne" has been added in my details as my mother.

If I now ask SIRI "Who is my mother", she replies "I don't know who Anne is". If I ask SIRI "call my mother at work", SIRI answers "Anne is not in your contacts.

Any idea how to fix it? I already deleted "Anne" and my own info, but the problem persists.

Cheers,
Christian

I was having this same problem--with 6 family members and a girlfriend, this was very frustrating.

What I did--it is weird that I had to do this--is that i went to the "me" contact (preferences-->Siri, must be set up) and deleted all of the family members that Siri had "remembered." Then, I found all of those contacts in my phone book and deleted all of their prefixes and suffixes (Ms., Mr., Mrs., &c).

I then told Siri to remember the relationships again--ie, "X is my mom, Y is my girlfriend." Now, when I tell Siri "text my mom," it has no trouble figuring it out.

I was getting that same "I don't know who your mom is" message, but this fixed it. I went back in and added back the prefixes too, and it wasn't a problem.

Hope this helps...weird workaround.

There is a bug, but it can be easily worked-around.

The Contact entry of you has a list of "Relationships," which is where Siri stores these Relationships. If you sync your Contacts with Outlook, Exchange, and other services (maybe Gmail?), your Contact entry is not formatted to support all of the Relationships.

To work around this:

  • Create a new Contact
  • The new Contact must be created as an "iPhone" or "iCloud" contact, depending on whether you turned on iCloud
  • The new Contact must be you... enter your name and contact info
  • At the bottom of the Contact info, you can select "Link Contact", which you can use to link the contact you just created with the Contact you sync with Outlook or Gmail. This is optional, but useful.
  • Save your Contact.
  • Open Settings and tap General, then Siri
  • Tap My Info and select the Contact you just created of yourself. Make sure you selected it from "iCloud" or "iPhone."
  • This only applies to the Contact entry for yourself. You don't need to modify the Contact entry for your mother and other Relationships.

It takes less time to do this than to explain this. I hope I was clear enough.

Siri can use the following relationships:

("Call My...")

  • mother
  • father
  • parent
  • brother
  • sister
  • child
  • friend
  • spouse
  • partner
  • assistant
  • manager

You can add customized labels, but the customized labels don't seem to work with Siri.

From an older post:

If you do not already have one, you need to make a contact for yourself in Contacts.

When you edit that contact, one of the options is to Add Field (it is way down at the bottom just above the Delete Contact button.

When you click Add Field, one of the options is to add Related People. You can then add all kinds of relationships...wife, husband, boyfriend, girlfriend, spouse, partner, mother, father, child, friend, assistant, etc.

After you have saved all your info in your contact, go to Settings > General > Siri and make sure that your contact is the one selected under My Info.

This way, when you say to Siri "call my wife", Siri will look at your contact to see who you have saved under the relationship field "wife".
