Syncing my iPhone 4 will not update iTunes play counts

Running a MacBook Pro with OSX Lion 10.7.2 and iTunes 10.5 (141).

Since upgrading my iPhone 4 to iOS5 - I have noticed that when syncing my phone in iTunes (wired), my 'play counts' do not update for recently played songs, and any songs played on my iPhone do not appear in the 'Recently Played' playlist in iTunes.

I mange my music manually on my iPhone, so had a go at removing all the music from it, then copying over just one album. Played the first track of that album on my iPhone which had been played 10 times. Synced iPhone, and still says 10 plays in the play count on iTunes.

Have checked the 'Home Sharing computers and devices update play counts' in the 'Sharing Preferences' in iTunes, but this has no effect.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

Is it a bug?

Am I missing something glaringly obvious?

Allow me to add my name to the "gee I'm kind of upset and I hope they fix this soon" list. I am running Snow Leopard lastest iTunes, iOS5, iPhone 4. I manually manage my podcasts [subscribed to approx 30] and this is hassle. I've just discover if I'm wired to iTune and replay the podcast off my iPhone then resync it then show it played. iphone will show a play count of two and iTunes a play count of one

Also a few weeks before the iOS5 update connecting my iPhone no longer activate iTunes application to start automatically though I clearly have that checked in my preferences. A minor annoyance but I not used to minor annoyances since I went all in on Apple products in 2007.

Another frustrated user with this bug.
I loved the plays feature, with all my heart! 😝

Listen to iPod while working, or travelling, and then on my iMac running Leopard 10.6.8 with the newest iTunes and iOS 5 while doing anything in my room, and I really enjoyed seeing which song I listen to the most, or which album is the most played etc, etc.
Now it simply doesn't work. And it makes me sad.
Please apple fix this asap!

I held out for iOS 5.0.1 update before posting, hoping it would resolve the issue. But it persists. I have tried syncing against iTunes 10.5 on WIndows 7 and OSX Lion, and play counts do not update on either machine. Play counts do get updated when played through home sharing, but I lose all counts of what I have listened to on the go. For folks who make heavy use of smart playlists this is a pretty big chunk of functionality to have break.

Hi people same problem here. Music count won't transfer to iTunes even after 5.0.1 update.

I would not expect this feature to be dissabled I think its a bug with iTunes sync or iOS as it seems ios 5 full of bug.

I don't know if you have noticed but coverflow and album arts are pixelated and coverflow is not that smooth anymore on my iPhone it's unusable. With 5.0.1 I was expecting all of this to be fixed. In any case I would like to see more features in music player like most played playlist (updatable music count). Recently added this is pathetic that only thing apple is promoting best "music" and their music players *****! Nokia can do it. Android cans do it. Blackberry can do it. They all have these features why can't we have them?

Apple PLZ fix music count (my playlists army updating cos of that)

As well as coverflow

And include automated playlist features (would be nice to see)

So I am another one who is very particular about my play counts and have had the same problems. Well I think I fixed it, cause everything is updating proplerly now. Here is what I did. Rather than checking "Manually manage music" in the summary section, check sync music under the music section, and then clck "Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres". Then click Apply. It works for me now. I was confused just like everyone else because as far as I can remember I always used to check the "Manually manage music" box. Hope this helped.

SOLUTION!

I think Mike93 has officially been promoted to tech 'NERD' status.

I wonder how long before the Apple developers screw this up and we all stumble on a problem after we've played 1,000 songs on our iPhones?

As a solution, it is somewhat cumbersome. The ability to just drag the music I wanted to my iPhone without having to check boxes and sift through countless releases in my iTunes library is what made managing multiple devices easy in iTunes. But I guess it will just have to do.

Fortunately, I deleted all my music on my iPhone once I discovered this problem, so probably don't have the same issues with people who have countless plays that haven't synced back to their iTunes. I'd be keen to learn if this solution actually synced all your historical data too.

Happy listening peeps!

Question for you. Are you actually selecting any playlists, albums, etc, or are you leaving them blank? If you are selecting any playlists, then still doesn't solve the whole problem: For example, I have a playlist that plays "unplayed songs" in another playlist. If you sync these playlists, it will not update on your iphone at all until you each time you sync with itunes.
