I understand some of the storage capacity is for the operating sysystem and looking around it looks like it is usually around 2B (eg..the 16 GB says 14 GB) but losing 7 GB of stoarage? That is the entire capacity of the new 8 GB iphone 4, how can that be possible?

I was surprised by the same thing, and thought exactly along the lines you did; that's about the size of the new iPhone 4's total capacity.
I'm facing the same problem... i can't believe that we loose 7GB ... One friend of mine just bought 4S 16GB and his phone appears 12GB (which means that the problem is not the IOS 5 that uses around 2GB )...

It's strange... So if you've bought an iPhone 4s 64gb you will have Only 57gb available? Loosing 7gb? And a person that bought 4s 16gb looses 2gb only Having 14gb? If we have the same 4s phone with the same iOS 5 why we have different storage availability?
