How can I tell if a contact has iOS 5?

In the subject of saving money, with iMessage it's free for iDevice users to text each other so how do I see if someone is using iOS 5 before I text them? I see how if they do have it then the texts are blue rather than green so that's cool and let's u know, but how can I tell if they have it before I text them?

Nvermind, if you go to text someone on an iPad, it will turn red if not using iOS 5 and will turn green on an iPhone if not using.
