No, you connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes, select your iPad's list item in the sidebar, click on the Summary tab in the iTunes' main window then click on the Update button. Before you do that, however, be sure to sync your iPad so that iTunes will make a current backup. Upgrading will completely wipe the iPad. After the new OS is installed you will have an option to restore from a current backup. This will then re-install whatever had been installed prior to upgrading the OS.

I;ve got the download but the ipad2 64 wants to back up, however my laptop is nigh-on full with windows stuff. How does one make the back up funnel the data to an external drive, which does have sufficient room? The ipad2 is also nearly full?

You cant. If you have an external drive, move some of the "fluff" from your hard drive to the external temporarily to free up some space.

If you're that low on space, you need to do some serious housecleaning before your system falls to its knees when it does run out of room.
