iMac won't open in safe mode
Trying to open my mac in safe mode, but just keeps opening normally, even though i am holding the shift key straight after the start up tone

You need your original restore DVD, or a Snow Leopard DVD, or some other OS X install disk such as a bootable clone that can boot your computer.
Then, you can install using the archive & install option.
That should get you going again, - unless your hard drive is failing...

Your welcome, glad it's OK. What are you trying to fix by restarting in Safe Mode?
My computer keeps pausing, just showing a spinning wheel, and thought it might have been the anti-virus software, so was removing that. done that but still pausing every 10 minutes and getting very annoying now
