Has anyone gotten this message? "This person cannot be reached by iMessage at this time."

I get this when I try to reply to the person NEXT TO ME after they send an iMessage to me. We tried all the regular bonehead fixes we could come up with (Turn off/on iMessage, devices, etc., tun cellular data on/off, turn wi-fi on/off, etc.) We are trying to get my phone (Verizon iPhone 4) to chat with my iPad (AT&T iPad 1). Thanks, everyone for your help.

I get the exact same message from my iPhone 4 to my iPad 2. Same carriers :S

I have been using iMessage with my 4GS and Mom's iPad 2 jsut fine. Until tonight. Suddenly - she cannot send me a message from iPad (send button is blue, but nothing happens). I tried to send her from my phone, and get the "cannot be reached at this time" pop up. ???? What's the deal??? We were fine until this evening.
