I've updated to lion and I want to be able to see my iWork documents on my iPhone does this mean I have to also purchase iWork for my phone... I thought apps were shared across devices. I currently have iWork 09 and when I attempt to update it I get notified that there is not a keynote app available to update but I have it installed...

The apps for Macs & for iOS devices are separate, you need to buy them for each system.
However, if you're just needing to view the documents on your iPhone you could export them as PDFs & then view them on your iPhone.

Ok I have another question then.
When I try to update my iWorks programs I keep getting an error message about there being no legable keynote program to update. What should I do?
How did you buy iwork? From Apple Store or from AppStore?

I got the mail notification that you have bought the box version, even though I can't see the answer here so far.
I think you have move Keynotes from the iWork folder in the Application folder. Install iWork from the box again and do the updates.
