Spray Painting an image on a background

For a theatre play I need to create an effect as if I am spray painting an image (a graffiti...) on a plain screen
The actor/s will spray paint on a screen and we want to have the effect as if he is actually doing it
We might then put a wall as a background for the graffiti
The image will be back projected so that can look kind of real....(I know it won't...)

The topic you will need to study is GRADIENT WIPE.
You bring in a grayscale image and use that to reveal your video. It's just a matte operation with luma control. More sophisticated applications of gradient wipe use a video image to control the matte. It's not difficult. Can also be done with green or blue. The trick is choreographing your actor with the prerecorded reveal.
