I hope someone can help me solve this issue. When I use the iPod and play music on my new iPhone 4S, it plays fine, but with an annoying static-like noise making the sound quality sound poor.
Any ideas as to what the diagnosis is and how I could possibly solve this dilemma?

And by the way, all of my music tracks were purchased through iTunes. I hope it is NOT a hardware issue...
I just bought the 4S and am having the exact same issue. It only does it when I use the earophone jack plugged into my car and several other audio sources. I have tried different cables and cannot figure out what the issue is. I called Apple support and they said they had not heard of that. I explained that this is my 3rd Iphone and I have never had that issue. You are right... it is a static noice while the music is playing and when you pause it is very noticeable. I am heading to Verizon in the morning to use one of there 4S's to see if it does the same thing.
I wonder if more that just weatherman11 and I are haing this issue. Anyone have any ideas?
After getting a replacement phone at the Apple Store, I found the same problem and static/distorted noise in the new piece of hardware. I figured it must be something I could do to solve the issue. I messed around with the settings and turned Sound Check ON. Just by changing this particular setting in my phone, the problem was solved. Try this and see if it alleviates the issue.
I can verify that turning Sound Check on eliminated the static in the earpiece of my 16GB AT&T phone. I hope Apple rolls a fix into the next update.
