Oct 25, 2011 6:15 AM in response to eberl1968by mom333,Thank you for the link to that thread. I found another link/solution within that thread:
I followed the solution stated in CNET website it it seems to have done the trick :-) I didn't have any issues with the sound today

OK I am aware the issue stated here goes back to 2007 but I think it is a headphone jack issue.
I will keep you posted if the problem comes back

I am now concluding that for me, I'm having two separate issues.
1. No audio sound - I had been talking to my sister earlier via speakerphone. Then when I tried to later call her normally, is when I couldn't hear her or a ring and the time counter was going. There seems to be a glitch with switching between headsets, speakers, siri and normal phone calls. I never use a headset, and didn't use Siri that day. It makes sense now....I couldn't hear anything when trying to call her, because she was the last person I called on speaker. Then when I called my niece (a new number) it worked fine. The next day I had the issue again when calling my husband, but I had been listening to music with my headphones on just prior to trying to call him. This must be a software issue that I hope Apple fixes ASAP.
2. Dropped calls / calls failed. I'm going to try what my friend (an Apple employee) suggested. He thinks because I restored my 4S from my old 3GS it's just exaggerating any issues I had on my old phone. He suggested I restore my phone, set it up as a new device, and then resync. Hopefully that will do the trick.

Oct 25, 2011 10:14 AM in response to Fengskyby AppleFanFromTexas,I have had the same issue. iP4S 64GB AT&T. Calls failing. When the call connects, I can't hear the person on the other end...or they can't hear me. I have worked with Apple support. I did all the restores/resets. I went to AT&T and got a new sim card. I eventually had my phone replaced. I still have the issue on the new device. It must be a software issue. I have now turned off Siri based on a suggestion but no luck... iP4 and 3GS AND 3G never had this issue...even after installing iOS 5. Please help Apple!

Oct 25, 2011 12:42 PM in response to Sid Hby Greg O'Neill,It definitely sounds like there's something going on with the phone. However, after a replacement if you notice idenitical problems in reception or calls, that's very strong evidence that something is happening with reception in those areas.

Oct 25, 2011 12:45 PM in response to mom333by Greg O'Neill,Your step 2 is really the most full-proof way to determine if something in the software is having problems. However some of your symptoms you've described sound familiar and MAY in fact be a fault with the phone anyway.
One thing you could pay attention to is whether or not the same symptoms are occurring in similar places, or in random locations?
When setting up as a new phone, you'll want to make sure you've properly synced your contacts and other information back to your PC first so that you won't lose anything important. You can follow this article here for assistance:

Oct 25, 2011 1:30 PM in response to Greg O'Neillby Alex Head2,FWIW, I have traveled with my phone and it happens in various places. It's not a service issue for me. Seems most clearly to be a software issue. Hoping for an update.

Oct 25, 2011 2:47 PM in response to Fengskyby AppleFanFromTexas,I just got off the phone with AT&T, and they said they are getting a large volume of calls on this topic. He said they are aware of the issue with the 4S. He said they think it is due to all the activations in a short time. Doesn't sound right to me, but I am trying it. They said they are resolving some of the issues by re-establishing the connection and re-registering the phone. They reset both of our phones and are calling back in three days to see if it worked.

Oct 26, 2011 5:46 AM in response to Fengskyby woolfiesmiff,I'm in UK using Vodafone network, more than 90% of ALL calls using 4s either end in call failed, open call but neither end hearing each other or me hearing them only.
Went to Vodaphone store and both people in store told me their 4S's do the same !! Seems like another Apple phone fail !
