Apple ID and iCloud: Primary email address?

I have an Apple ID, (for the sake of example) falconer@gmail.com.

When I signed up for iCloud with that Apple ID, I activated Mail & Notes, which prompted me to add a new @me.com email address to my account; I chose (for the sake of example) falconer@me.com.

That new address I added for Mail & Notes, falconer@me.com, currently shows up as an "alternate" email address when I log in to manage my existing falconer@gmail.com Apple ID.

When I try to change my "primary" email address to that new falconer@me.com address, I get the following error, which seems outdated as it still refers to MobileMe:

"You cannot create an Apple ID using a MobileMe account. If this is your email address, it is also your Apple ID."

How can I make the new falconer@me.com the "primary" email address on my Apple ID, so that correspondence from Apple no longer gets sent to my Gmail address, but instead gets sent to my new iCloud address?

Who else is experiencing this issue?

You guys have it all wrong, there's 2 clouds, the iCloud that just came out which took over mobileme and the iTunes in the Cloud which holds your iTunes store purchases.

imanog, I suggest you check https://appleid.apple.com before you make statments like this. A single Apple ID can be used for:

iTunes, iChat, MobileMe, Apple Online Store (inc App Store), Apple Retail Stores, and here Apple.com Support

It does appear that this list is slightly out-of-date: I think it should also say that the same Apple ID can be used for:

iCloud, Facetime, Find Friends

My problem ist similar, but not the same:

I have an old @t-online.de address, which I used to create an iTunes Store account when I was still in the Windows world... now that's long ago !

I then bought the iMac, and because it seemed very convenient, created the @mobile.me account, not only for me, but for the whole family. It was and still is completely spam-free, which is why I then switched to using the mobile.me account as my regular email acct. The t-online account is just sitting there, receiving spam and I don't really know what to do with it. I don't use it regularly, just look into it from time to time...

However, I never changed the t-online address for the iTunes store, because I just didn't think it was necessary.

When I now try to change the store account into the mobile.me account (on the apple ID website under 'manage your account'), the website doesn't let me, giving me the error message (you...can't create an apple ID using a mobile.me account etc.).

Having recently bought an iPhone 4S, complicates matters further, because it needs a connection to the app store (question - is the app store identical with the iTunes store ??) and supposedly also to the iCloud.

Now my question: which email account am I supposed to use for what, i.e. for iCloud, iTunes, email ? Somehow, I came out of all these settings procedures on the iPhone with my t-online account as iCound ID, but I wonder if thats right or wrong ?

The guys at apple support don't know either what to do.

TOTALLY CONFUSED....

Can anyone help ??

caramanza,

the account which currently holds your iTunes purchases is the logical account to use for iTunes.

The iCloud (MobileMe) account you setup is just that in effect - a mobileme account. You can use this for iTunes/App Store (They are the same account/purchasing mechanism) however you'd essentially be unable to use your previous purchases on your iDevice as it can only handle one iTunes account at a time.

Hope this helps!

Similar problem here: I have 2 Apple IDs (@mac.com and @me.com) and somehow, my account decided to merge them...So yes, they can merge!

I've been using the @mac.com ID since someone from the Apple Store Satff created it for me a few years ago... But it's just an ID. I've never had access to any mailing service or maybe I don't know how to access, but still now that I have created my free @me.com account, I can't use it for e-mail since my iPhone has decided automatically to use the @mac.com one the as primary account.

Any time I try to change it, the message "This account has already been migrated to iCloud" appears...

It doesn't make any sense: I can access to the mail through the computer (icloud.com) but not through my Mail app on the other devices. That means that my @me.com account exists and works, not as the @mac.com address, that returns every message with an "unknown or illegal alias" message...

Never thougt it would take sooo long trying to solve this and how dissapointing is becoming!!!

It is interesting how this thread has morphed.

Some people (like yourself) want to merge apple ids together

Some (like myself) want to be able to use a non-me.com address with apple services (like icloud email).

Others want the opposite, already signed up using something like gmail.com and want to switch (which I guess is a variation of the first).

Too bad Apple does what Apple wants and won't ever see any of this discussion. 😟

Right there with you! This has bugged me since the introduction of iCloud. You want users to transition to iCloud from their current e-mail provider... but you won't let them change their Apple ID - Primary E-mail Address to their newfound iCloud @me.com? Where is the logic in that!?

And to anyone trying to argue that it's good to have a backup e-mail for things like password recovery... you're missing the point. No one is saying delete the Alternate E-mail Adress option, we're saying allow users to use their @me.com as their Pimary E-mail Adress. By not allowing this, all my iTunes notifications e-mails (including purchase notifications) is going to my Gmail address... you know the address I stopped using when Apple convinced me to switch to iCloud.

It doesn't make any sense, there's no possible argument to the contrary.
