does macbook air fragile as it looks?

I was wondering if it'll be as fragile as its appearance, because of its super duper lite and thin appearance , and what would happen if it accidently fall from about 1 meters distance from the ground?

Hi OliviafromJakarta,

I can say MBA is a very resistant equipment. I already dropped mine on the the ground from about one and a half meter and absolutely nothing happened unless this case got a little creased, it is still working very well. Ok, OS Lion has never worked very well, but the equipment is so fine. So, I must agree with JE13, " it's not as fragile as it seems. It can survive some bumps and tumbles. But like all laptops, it is delicate equiptment it should be handled with care".

:-D

If you dropped it 1 meter down onto concrete? What would happen if you dropped a Macbook Pro, or a desktop computer, or a tablet or a smartphone.....any of these could be damaged by such a drop and the Air is no different. The screen could crack, the interal workings could be affected. These are not made out of rubber. However, the Air isn't made out of glass, either. It's made out of aluminum and it can, in most cases, survive small spills from a table onto carpet.

So the answer to your question is: it's not as fragile as it seems. It can survive some bumps and tumbles. But like all laptops, it is delicate equiptment it should be handled with care.

If you think yourself liable to drop something, buy insurance for it when you buy it. Don't wait until after the accident, because then it will be at your expense how it is solved. Find a good notebook bag, that allows you carry it either over your shoulder, or in a hand, and make sure the entire inside is padded around the notebook within the bag. Only transport it when it is in the bag. And do shut down the machine before transporting it. Inertia can under the wrong conditions damage even sudden motion sensor hard drives.

Are you saying the screen cracked by itself? Call Apple, explain this, and keep asking for "supervisors" till you get someone to listen to you.

If, however, it did fall and the screen cracked, well, that's not Apple's fault. It's their fault if the screen goes black on you or gets fuzzy, but not if it's cracked because it fell.

Like most laptop computers (with the exception of some ruggedised models like the Toshiba Toughbook) the Macbook Air is a delicate piece of electronic equipment. Most laptops will suffer some form of damage if dropped from a height of 1 metre onto a hard surface. The things that are most likely to be damaged are

  • screen
  • case - especially the thinner screen half
  • possibly the interior logic board

My advice - treat it like the expensive and delicate precision piece of equipment that it is and it will last well.
