New iPhone 4S unresponsive, requiring a hard reset on several occasions

Three times since I unwrapped my new iPhone 4s on Friday (three days ago), I've found that my iPhone was unresponsive: pressing either the Sleep/Wake or Home buttons did nothing, alarms didn't go off, the back was warm to the touch as if it was running something intense. It was necessary for me to hold down both buttons for awhile to force a reset - the Apple logo appeared and the phone rebooted.

Once it was running again, everything seemed normal.

I can't see what was happening before the reset, since the reset seems to clear the system logs (visible in System Status and other apps). It feels like some software is getting stuck in a loop and locking up the entire device.

Is anybody else having a similar problem? If I let this go on for too long, the heat generated would run the battery right down to zero. But this isn't the battery consumption problem written about in other posts - this is essentially an unresponsive iPhone 4S problem.

Thoughts?

Same issue for me. It seems random when the phone becomes unresponsive. I'll lock the screen as usual, come back to it after 30 minutes and home button or lock buttons dont help. Hard reset fixes the issue (Holding both lock and home buttons for 30 seconds). I saw the iPhone4S auto sends diagnostics info so hopefully Apple is already working on an iOS release to fix these bugs. I just opened a support case and I'll call later today.

inquitive7, any updates on the status of your phone or a possible solution?

My phone occasionally powers off in standby, maybe once a day, sometimes more. Occasionally a hard reset is needed. I don't see any panic.plsts under settings -> diagnostic and usage, however. Could it be because I selected "don't send to apple" when setting up the phone?

I bought my 4s 28 GB in October and tonight was the first time it locked up. I was reading a news blog and the screen went blank with just the little wheel download icon that was not moving. I had it plugged into iTunes this morning (I have Windows 7 64 bit) and have listened to podcasts all day no problemo.

Seems pretty random. Don't like the fact that it heats up when frozen. Did the hard reboot as suggested and seems to be syncing ok now with home computer.

A lot of people seem to be having this same problem. What's up with this?

I've had my 16 gig 4S for 6 days and it locked up today for no apparent reason. It did get warm to the touch and was completely unresponsive~ even called it to see if that might wake it up. After being locked up all day, my co-worker told me to do a hard reset. Came back on fine although battery was drained to 10%. Seems to be fine now but I'm really concerned. Had my 3GS (which was used from family member) for 2 years w no problems. Is there a fix for this? Can I still purchase the protection plan (don't recall being offered to purchase plan at AT T) ?

I was mad mad today but now just sad this new purchase may not have been worth it.

I have had this issue on and off with my 4S since I bought it 3-4 months ago. I have a 4S 64GB. I am coming from a windows phone 6.5, so a reset now and then is not that uncommon. The difference is, my Apple is like every week. I finally went in to have the so called Genius Bar look at it yesterday. They would not listen that it may be a hardware issue. They found many Apple name brand apps that were corrupted. They wiped the phone and reloaded everything. That same day, it locked up again. I have another appt today to find out what's up. This is my first real Apple product. I went to Apple because of reliability. So far, I am not impressed.

Well, it's been 12 days since the "not so genius bar" has replaced my phone. It has had no issues at all since the replacement. I reloaded all of the same apps from the backup I made on my PC. These are the same apps that they attempted to tell me was causing my issues both times before. On my last phone, they said that I caused the second round of lock ups by reloading the same apps from backup. Looks like the "not so geniuses" were wrong and this forum of us normal folks were right...again.

I had this problem originally. My wife and I both bought 4S. She never had a lockup. I had frequenbt lockups. As per AppleCare I wiped the phone and reloaded from scratch (not from backup). Things seemd to go fairly well after that. Here and there it did freeze up though. Then on 1/2 and 1/3 it locked up within 12 hours of each other with the panic list in diagnostics. Took it in and they replaced my phone with a refurbished. No problems since then

Funny, now that I have my iphone fixed and completed the lack of service surveys, the Apple manager wants to discuss my survey. I am not sure he wants to hear my view in person. I was very polite, but matter of fact, in the survey. Apple needs to start listening to their customers about the problems and reading their own web site's discussions.

A solution for the brave

Hey guys I have had this problem myself with a half responsive button, I have written the below article which has fixed my home button.

I had bought a replacement button but was daunted by the job at hand in taking the phone apart. Have a read and post your comments to let others know if it helped you too. Richard applecor:apple:

I got my new iPhone 4S - 64GB white model just few days ago.(india)

Since day 1 this problem has started.

The phone just simply dies wen left idle.

Ive had no issue while im working on it, but 1 times out of 5 when i leave it idle for like more than 15-20 mins, it just dies.

Wont start up normally at all.

To start it up i use the "10s both buttons pushed" method, it starts up all fine den, as though nothin was wrong.

This has happened more than 6-7 times in the past 3 days(since the time i bought it).

Ive raised a case with apple support, they first considered it being a software issue.

I had version 5.0.1(9A405). They made me upgrade to the latest patch 5.0.1(9A406) today.

Again got the same problem, am really ****** off. 😠

Will be calling back tomorrow, and try to get it exchanged.

Really unhappy, not expected such a major issue on my 1st apple purchase.
