iMessage doesnt work without wi-fi or 3G
You need to have either enabled, otherwise how would it send the message.
As was mentioned, you need to have at least 3G on or Wifi. It will not work if both of these are turned off (i.e Airplane mode). And no it should not count against your text messaging plan if you are sending imessage to other idevice users.
I also forgot to mentioned that imessage is free within idevice users that has iOS 5 installed.

iMessage is nothing to do with 3G.
iMessage uses email addresses (not phone numbers) and needs wifi enabled and running (and ios5). You can of course text (sms) people in the normal way using 3g/cell, but you pay for that as you always did.
iMessage messages/conversations are coloured blue on your device, not green like sms/text
You can also send iMessage through 3G tho and don't really need wi-fi to be enabled.
Hi,
You have to have WiFi, or 3G to use iMessage - You also will only use iMessage with another iOS device, for example, another iPhone with iOS5, an appropriate iPod Touch, or an iPad.
Charges won't affect your normal texting plan - I have no texting plan, and since 99% of the people I work, and do business with, all have iPhones, or iPads, as well as some iPod Touches, so it's nice for me.
I don't text much at all, and prefer FaceTime, or email, and iMessage puts the icing on the cake - it works a treat.
Cheers,
M.
I have tested iMessage with both wifi and 3G turned off and iMessage still sends

Well obviously it will work on Edge network. But have you tried sending imessage when in airplane mode and everything is turned off?
Even without edge it works just on the cellular network. I know it won't work in airplane mode but I thought it only worked on wifi or 3G
iMessage is completly 100% free ONLY if the person you wish to talk to is using IOS 5 and has iMessage on with a valid ID. there are no charges to your data plan or anything. iMessage works on Wi-fi as well as celular data. If the user you wish wish to talk to has neither an device with IOS 5, then your text will be send as a regular text message being the collor green and will be charged.

I believe that violates a few laws of phyisics.
Yeah I get how it works. Everything on apple site about iMessage and other sites state wifi & 3G which is not the case you can also send iMessage when on your standard cellular network without Edge or 3G
iMessage works using 3G and also uses mobile phone numbers as ID. It neither requires wifi nor email addresses exclusively.
If you don't have 3G a cellular network or Wi-Fi iMessage will not work.
I figured it out an important feature to save you money!!! The automatic setting on iMessage is that when iMessage is NOT available (Server is Busy), it automatically sends as an SMS text instead, thus charging you money! You can turn OFF this feature.
You have to goto Settings- Message - iMessage - turn OFF "send as SMS text if iMessage is not available." Take a look. Once the feature is turned off the iMessage server will keep the text and send it when the server is not busy. There may be a very slight delay, but you save money.
Clip from article:
"SMS texts you've sent will show up with a green background, while iMessage texts show up in blue. While you'll still have to pay the traditional fees for any SMS texts you send, it bears repeating that all iMessage texts go out over Wi-Fi or 3G and are completely free."
