Again, just like the spotlight search issues, this is no solution, is a workaround for a really annoying issue. There shouldn't be any need to do workarounds, specially on the phone most primitive and core feature...making calls. If that doesn't work, everything else doesn't matter. Again is such a shame to see a great product failing for a buggy software and is also very disappointing to see no offici statements from apple. We're wasting call minutes and most important compromising our communications. I moved from BB, I could not control my integration systems from there, I couldnt take descent pictures and I couldnt browse comfortably, but at least I could make phone calls.

This 4s is just a fancy handheld computer that lets you make phone calls when it wants to. I guess the old jokes about iPhones are true.

Just curious, which jokes are those?

That apparently the iPhone does everything and anything but make phone calls properly.

Well I know for sure it is only the Iphone 4S issue.  I have a Iphone 4 that I gave to my wife when I upgraded to the 4S and I never had that issue and I did all the updates.  The mute issue started when I was txting the Siri kicked in when I did not hit the mic icon and then after that all calls I made were muted.  I had to hard boot the phone to make a phone call. Then I noticed that when I was txting someone I would recieve the msg they were typing and then it just stopped showing up like it should.  I had to back out of the txt msg and then touch the msg that just came in from the same person.  I had to hard boot to get it to work right again.  This seems to be a Siri issue that Apple has not addressed yet. I hope they fix it soon.

Hi there, I am having the same problems with my recently purchased iPhone 4s 16g. Have tried everything including your suggestion but still no success. Btw I m from Malaysia and the IPhone 4s was only launched on the 16th December. It angers me that Apple has turn a deaf ear to everyone and Apple ' s latest ios 5.01 update build A9406 did not rectify theseproblems I was using a IPhone 4 before this and had no such issues.

    Hey Guys,

Im on my 4th Iphone 4S, firstone exchange for a new one from At&T, last two from Apple refurbished.

NONE of them have a mic that works. They other caller cant hear me for the first 15 seconds of the call.

I saw a post somewhere and tried it. Seemed to help. He said it was related to the proximity software regardless of the Siri settings. When I push CALL to make a call I usually put the phone directly to my ear. He said hold it in your hand until it connects then to your ear..It worked..Stil need a fix

I’m a dedicated Apple product user (two MacBook pro's, two IPhone 4s w/two year agreement,IPod touch, iPod Nano). For this to be occurring to my IPhone 4s without apple fixing it, shed poorly on Apple and their products. Especially considering the death of the Great Steve Jobs. The lack of issue resolution by the CEO's,Customer service personnel, and thee Apple Corporation as a whole tells me the consumer that without Steve Jobs this corporation has reached its peak. If this is this case then I two have reached my peak of consumption for apple products. Fix it and soon apple or you’ll have to face the backlash from customers everywhere.

    Thank you.

Got my new 4S about 10 days ago and having the same problems described above. First noticed it with Siri - it seemed "she" couldn't understand me at all. After some calls and complaints from those on the other end, I'm thinking it was the mic that was messing Siri up. Not sure if I should get a replacement or what. Anyway, just putting my "vote" in for a fix, please.

Same issue here... iPhone 4S does not work with Facetime (people on other end cannot hear me) nor does it record sound when registering video with camera app. Sound is ok when making phone calls, also works with dictafone app, Siri is hearing me as well. Repairing/resetting via iTunes did not cure the issue.

I have arranged a replacement just 5 mins ago. I hope the new one will work.

After having followed this thread for a while I think we might conclude that:
    1. the problem arises in several forms. The core problem being the mic not working for outgoinjg calls

    2. the problem generally arises after some time. And it might be intermittent.

    3. There is no fix. In a few instances starting from scratch seems to have helped (temporarely?)

    4. Apple replaces the device the moment you metnion the mic-problem, it seems they are aware but have different priorities.

    5. There are a few instances where replacements showed the same problem. This suggests that the problem does not concern a few in 100000 but rather a significant percentage, but only the replacement service really knows the magnitude of the problem.

    5. To me it looks like an interaction of a hardware AND a software problem. This is possibly quite complex.

Every problem can be solved if enough resources are spent on it. Apparently Apple doesn't want to spend enough. I think we need someone with investigative journalistic talents finding out how big the problem is, what Apple is doing about it and subsequently informing a large journal.

Under pressure I suppose Apple with adjust its priorities.

iPhone 4S 64 G.  I thought I had solved it by disabling Siri's "Lift to Speak" option but after 10 days I started having problems with incoming or outgoing calls alike.  I disabled Siri altogether and so far it has been OK.  It has been only a week so we will see.  It's unfortunate because I used Siri all the time while in the car.  Much easier to have it call people or send texts than taking my eyes off the road to do it.  A few people have asked me about the 4S and I tell them I can't recommend it.  It is real expensive, has some significant problems, and doesn't seem to have the support of Apple behind it.

So Apple, how much business are you losing via word of mouth from all of us telling our friends about your defective product?
