I updated my iPad2 to IOS 5 over the weekend, as requested by iTunes when i sync'd on Saturday.  Since then, the iPad is periodically quitting and restarting during use.  It doesn't seem to be app related as it has occered while using Safari, e-mail, Scrabble, InsideLine, Monster Fantasy Sports HD, and Ebay motors apps so far.  I have tried closing all other apps and running one at a time, but it still did the periodic random restart.  I tried turning off all of the iCloud syncing options, still no change.  The iPad2 was stable under the old OS and never crashed or did this random restart thing.   By the way, when I reference restarting, it really restarts, it goes blank, then after a bit, the white apple logo is on the screen, then the unlock screen appears (after some time).  On a few occasions, merely sliding the unlock slider caused it to reboot yet again.

For reference it is a 64gb ipad2 with about 20% of the storage memory in use, wifi only.  The iPad is not and has not been jailbroken, it is bone stock.

This is really frustrating.  Any suggestions?

    Anyone else having this problem?

Any suggestions to stop the random crash/reboot problem?

I got same problem as yours. Definitely, this must be fixed. On the other hand, I also installed iso5 to my iphone4, no such problem.

tedchong80, thank you for replying.  I thought maybe I was the only one having this problem.  In a selfish way I hope more people have the same experience so Apple is motiviated to prioritize fixing this issue.

    Same issues here. Really annoying!

Apple has nothing to fix. The standard advice from the user guide applies:  Restart. If that doesn't do it, reset. If that doesn't do it, restore.

For interest, the User Guide is available at or downloadable from iTunes as an iBook.

@tonefox, apple better have a better answer than yours.  They sure as **** have something to fix.

I did the restart - No change, still crashes, no identifiable change.

I did the reset - No change, still crashes, no identifiable change.

I did the restore - (a long process I might add) - Still periodically crashing, only now even more often than before.

(I have gone through this cyle a few times now with no success in getting the system stabilized)

Crashing occurs most often in Safari, but it occurs in other apps as well.

If apple's only answer is to continue trying the restart, reset and restore, then this is absolutely unacceptable.  Apple needs to get their s*it together.

My ipad2 is completely unreliable with ios5.   Now with my latest restore it lasts about 20 minutes before the first crash, then it crashes about once a minute or two after that.

same problem here. at times, random apps would crash while using it on my ipad 2 with IOS5. at first i thought it was because i did not update the app and that it was not compatible with ios5. However, after having updating the app when there was an update available, apps randomly crashes.

This also happens with Safari. I've turned off my ipad a few times, but that didnt solve the problem. I'm recluctant to do a restore, seeing that others have tried with same results.

I have ios5 on my iphone 4 and that has been stable.

Seems like there is a bug in ios5 with the ipad2.

Apple, please be aware of this and include a fix on your next ios update.

    Hi all,

I am having the same issue.  It is becoming very frustrating.

I was a bit moe annoyed than usual when I made my last post, and for that I apologize.  But, I too thought it might be old apps so I made sure to update everything.  However, nothing seems to make any positive difference.  Because it can occur in any app, including safari with nothing else in the background, my guess is that it is an errant os process.  I wish I could narrow it down more, but the surrounding events do not show any apparent pattern.  Sometimes it goes more than an hour without a crash, othe times it repeatedly crashes in intervals of a few minutes.

For those having the problem, please post your specs.  Maybe the problem is with one type of configuration.

Mine are:  black 64 gb iPad 2 Wifi only (no 3G)

Hi, I have the same problem as well on my iPod touch 4th generation. I upgraded it once the iOS 5 was available. And at that time was fine. This frustrating periodic crashing started yesterday and I already made sure that all my apps are the latest version. The interesting part is my iPad 2 running iOS 5 has no such a problem at all.

I tried reboot, now it seems alright. Although the suggestion of "3R" usually works, I would like to know if this happens often among the iOS 5 users.

Same issues or me. Specs are similar. I have an iPad2 with 3G capability but it isn't activated.   Seems to e very random when it happens.

I have filed a bug report for this as Safari crashes at least 5-10 times per day. I can't say I have seen crashes elswehere though.

After my 2nd iPad replacement (first two had 3G failure < 6 months after initial purchase), I had a few crashes in Safari and other apps while still on iOS 4.3.3.  After a complete restore seemed to bring it down to "very infrequent", I updated to iOS5 in early October... and the crashing became constant.  Games, Safari, Calendar, other apps, all crash. The exact result varies from video and sound aberrations in games followed by "freezing", to crashing out to the home screen but not being able to restart the app, to losing all app data if I can restart, to a spontaneous "reboot" to an outright shut-down requiring a reset.

    I have done:

Close all apps out of memory

    Update all apps.

    Load new apps.

Complete restore from factory settings - twice.

Mine is an iPad 2 3G 64 GB. As I said - I'm on my 3rd one in 6 months.  This is an amazing gizmo when it works, but crashing out of anything after only a few minutes operation is not "working" in any definition I've ever encountered.

My iPod 3G has also crashed a couple times, but seems to recover quickly with no losses and usually it's only one app and crashing out to the home screen.

I'm going to book mark this thread. Will also report back after the Genius appointment I have this coming weekend.

I have the same problem but with my iPhone 4, 16 gb since I upgraded it to IOS5, it resets it self randomly for no apparent reason. Although I got to say that in my iPod Touch 8 gb it works fine... ¿any solution?
