Iphone 4S / iOS5 - Battery drain / issues - An idea Ihaven't seen anywhere yet (17th October 2011)....

As with many iPhone 4S adopters, I have noticed that mybattery is under performing compared to my iPhone 4 (on iOS4, granted). The issue seems to be standby, more than usage. In standby my iPhone 4 only dropped1% battery every 2-3 hours. Now I am dropping 1-2% every hour.

I have done ALL the tricks I have read on these forums (listed below)

However, just now, I received a "Badge" style notificationon my home screen from an app which is NOT IN MY "NOTIFICTAION CENTRE"LIST. It transpires that some of the apps not in the list can still push notifications in the old style. Annoyingly, these are apps which, on my old iPhone 4, I had all notifications turned off!! The move the iPhone 4S/iOS5 has turned them on!

I have gone through them switching everything off. I willsee what happens with that

Could this be a battery drain that people are missing? I amnot hugely technical with this kind of stuff, more a process of eliminationtype guy!

The tricks I HAVE employed:

Set up phone as new (lost all my game saves, dammit!)

Turned off locations services to all but those apps that need it (one or two)

Turned off all unnecessary items in notification centre

Bluetooth OFF

Wifi ON (I am usually at home or work; wifi is LESS of adrain than 3G)

Ping OFF in restrictions

Itunes OFF in restrictions

Hidden location services such as time zone locator OFF

iCloud deleted

No email on phone.

Reset network settings

Lowered brightness

key sounds OFF

(Possibly others....I have spent some time on this!)

P.S. I have not run a full battery cycle yet, in process, and will report back with results

P.P.S ...Apple..... PATCH iOS5 ASAP! (assuming this will solve it!) Surely there cannot be THAT many defective iPhone 4S batteries out there?!

iPhone 4, iOS 5, iPhone 4S, NOT iPhone 4

Called Apple Support today about this issue. The tech was no help and told me she had the same phone and has no issues? She then said, did you just call to complain? WOW, great customer service. Come on Apple your loyal customers deserve better. Just tell you're aware of the issues and are working on it. I think most of us would understand that. Don't put this on us.

I had the iPhone 4 before the 4S. I installed iOS 5 on my iPhone 4, restored as a new and noticed that the battery life was not as good has it was on iOS 4.

When I got my 4S, I set up as new. And I saw equally the same battery life has I did on my iPhone 4. So I am certain that its an iOS 5 thing that is causing the shorter battery life some are seeing. I notice more of a drop in battery level when the phone is in sleep than I did with my iPhone 4 on iOS 4, perhaps a 4 % drop in a 4 hour period.

Today for example. I switched my 4S on at 7:45am (at 100 percent). I played a game for 25-30 minutes. Connected my 4S to my TV via my Apple Digital AV Adapter and watched a video podcast for around 10-15 minutes. Listen to a couple of audio podcasts for around 10 minutes, sent a couple of text messages, had a 3 minute telephone call, wirelessly synced with iTunes for around 10 minutes on and off, and my battery life is at 63 percent. I'll admit, with iOS 4, I would probably have had more battery life left.

My usage shows:

Usage= 2 hours 21 minutes

Standby= 12 h 28 m standby

Does my battery life seem ok or would you say there is a problem with my battery, or anything to be concerned about, then perhaps someone can advise me on that?

I manually check email (push is swtiched off). Location services on for around 3 apps (these apps only use location services when I load them). I am in the process of running my battery till flat for the first 3 charges (so far I've done this twice).

Don't get me wrong, I expect to get 2 days of moderate/light use before needing to charge.

With iOS 4 I would perhaps have got 3 or if I was lucky into 4 days but that would be pushing it. Perhaps iOS 5 has more processes running and as such is more power intense OS.

It will be interesting to see what Apple's testing throws up in the next few weeks/months.

Much like many of the people google-ing the 4S battery problems, and stalking the Apple discussion boards for answers, I'm becoming tired of the fact that I feel the need to do something about the battery life of my second apple device ever. (first was the 1st generation nano in 2005) I'm becoming increasingly frustrated by the Inconveinience its causing me, and the way in which Apple seems to be 'handling' this situation. I dont know about anyone else... but it wouldnt kill them to make an online statement as to what they are up to in there.. i know its a big issue and they probably dont have time to do it and whatnot... but Jeez, I honestly think we deserve some inside knowledge as to how Apple is going about fixing this thing.

Ive been severly disappointed and feel a little bit hard done by, when all i can find is that some dude called some other dude, to put some app on some dudes phone to find whats been going on. I sense that they are doing something about it, but its been a while since i started looking for my own solutions and im getting sick of draining the battery, turn on and off notifications, turning on and off cell data, playing around with location settings, backing up, restoring, deleting... the list goes on.. And i think its about time that apple says something to reassure us that they are working on a fix, and not leaving us hanging by making us look for our own fixes (of which some are ridiculous: whats the point in having a phone with all these cool capabilities if all we can do to save the battery is turn them all off?)

I found that deleting the brand new fb app helped. But that was short lived after it again became increasingly hot. I also deleted find my friends, to no avail.

When i called apple customer service last week about it, i had already done all the troubleshooting they have lined up for us when we call about these issues, and when i did my full restore to factory settings and set up as a new phone, the only thing that changed about the phone, was my rather cool background and ringtones. They said if that didnt work that i should call them back and they will talk to me about sending it off and getting a replacement. But since discovering that ALOT of people are having this problem, i doubt this will fix anything.

Dear Apple. In memory of your once amazing leader Steve Jobs (R.I.P) please, PLEASE tell us where you are at in terms of providing your once extremely satisified customers with an answer to this lingering question.

Add me to the list! You can practically watch the battery drain on standby on my new iPhone 4S compared to my old 4 and evey other model I have owned from the first. Every time I turn it on, I am shocked to see the battery bar and am constantly plugging it in to recharge to avoid a complete battery drain, which is how I first encountered the problem the day after I bought the phone! I've tried changing some settings, but nothing seems to make a difference. Hope everyone will get the "official word" from Apple SOON!

Its getting pretty annoying hey.. Im not blaming anyone or doubting that someone who doesnt work at apple will find a solution, but apple made the **** thing. And as a frsutrated and annoyed 18 year old im not exactly satisfied with apple's poor PR techniques on this topic.. As i said in my last post, I'm becoming tired of trying to fix it myself not knowing where apple stands on this situation...

This is my second 4s on AT&T. I am losing 10-13% an hour without even using my iPhone. I have tried turning the Time Zone seting off, disabeling location services and everything else I can try. The battery life on this phone is horrible. As a buisiness user I see my choices limited and will most likely go back to my iPhone 4 which does not seem to have this issue even with OS5 installed. I would find it very hard to recommend anyone buying this phone unless you are teathered to a charger 7x24. If I keep this phone I would need an external battey pack to make it even usable. As I typed this response another 1% gone. I'm now at 80% after3 full charges and conditioning and not a single phone call or internet use, etc. How disappointing.

Hi all. I seem to have solved the battery problem on my iPhone 4S!! Firstly I tried all the suggestions on these forums, rebooting the phone, setting it up as new and even disabling iCloud contacts; however none of these worked.

What has worked though is changing the location services settings! I noticed that in the service settings of this option the 'setting time zone' option was on and the little arrow icon was purple, meaning that it was active. This service triangulates your location using GPS and phone reception info in order to set the appropriate time. Now at the time of looking into this I was not moving, in fact I had not left the country since getting the phone. And. Y turning this function off I have seen a huge battery life improvement. Previously, I was loosing 10% every hour (standby mode) and now 10% every 7hrs (standby mode).

Hope this helps!

I am running the same stuff that i had on my IP4, but am having the same issue on my IP4S, poor battery, from unplugging it in the morning it has dropped between 5%-8% in the first hour on standby......this is a serious issue, as after 6 hours its on 20% or less, and nothing has been used, but on another note, i did upgrade my old IP4 to IOS5 and the battery started to drain quickly on that... so is it an ISO5 issue? as i feel £499.00 on the IP4S is at the moment a bad investment....

they better sort it and soon, esp when Nokia state there new Lumia has virtually 335 hr standby time. i am seriously considering returning this IP4S, as APPLE have failed again.

Sort it

ASAP

You know i just got an 4S and noted oddly that the battery did not seem to be holding up well. Without previous experience there was little to correlate to. But a recent article I read said that the notifications were the source of the problem. So, I tried this fix by switching off the location notifications and this appears to have helped a lot.

can't add much more but will watch this and see how it performs over the next week

My wife and I have both been experiencing the same, frustrating issue. The jury is still out, but signs are that this 'fix' seems to be working ...... only tried it a few hours ago, but battery life seems to be holding ...... at least until Apple release an iOS5 update, or whatever they need to do.
