iPhone 4S - verizon data switching from 3G to 1x with full bars, iPhone 4S - verizon data switching from 3G to 1x with full bars

I just got on the verizon network, with the 4S. Even when I have full bars, I get the blue 1x circle. I have to flip on airplane mode, and then sometimes I am able to restore back to 3G.

Any ideas why this is happening?

Maybe I should have gotten AT&T? [In new york city]
