No, changing the settings doesn't affect the problem. When it's working —for that one search you get after rebooting—it honors the settings and searches only checked items ... so I don't believe it's a settings issue.

But after that single search (if you get that) it simply shuts down and stops working. No results of any kind from any area.

Nada. Zilch. Zippo.

I do have many apps and used the search as a way to quickly jump to an app instead of swiping through numerous screens. This is killing me. Hoping the fix is released soon; having searched the web on the issue, I see that it affects a great many users of ios5.

I have been having the same problem all the same symptoms as previous posters. I am new to iPhone coming from BB where I used universal search continually so I was very disappointed to see that such a major feature was so buggy - essentially non-functional. Did multiple resets and restored from backups but still no go. Also the same problem on wife's iPhone 4 with iOS5. So definitely an iOS 5 software bug.

I think the issue is when Spotlight tries to search your emails. Basically for me Spotlight will only work if I have mail unchecked in Settings - Mail checked all by itself will yield same loss of functionality. Which is still a major issue since you have to go to the mail app in order to search mail which works. This is a huge deal for me!

My wife's iPhone 4 running iOS5 also has the same problem with Spotlight and I can fix it by deselecting email search option. But there is only one app that is common between our two phones - "Poynt" - removing that does nothing. Its not something that is affecting every phone but those that are affected it is unlikely to be a third party app imo. Do you have email checked in your Spotlight prefs?
