iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing. Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue? I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Yeah, same thing happened to me. I couldn't hear the caller through the receiver, but when I put it on speaker. It was very faint(volume was up 100% and on ringer). As a matter of fact, I didn't even hear it ring when I placed the call. It just connected moments later.

Anyways, so far so good today. Hope it's a software problem and not hardware. I really don't want to get another replacement phone. If restart or setup as new phone fails. Just take it to the apple store and get a replacement.

When I get phone calls 50% of the time the caller can't hear my voice at all on both of our iphone 5's... that was on ios 6.1.3. Yesterday I had a genius appointment they gave us new two new phones with ios 6.1.2. And I have the same problem. Called the phone ten times and I coun't and it only work 4 out of 10 tries. First I thought that it was the ios update, but now with the older version and same problem... I wonder if the problem started with ios 6.1.2.... I'm not sure what to do at this point!

Almost the same here. Caller can't hear me at all too. It seems like mute button is pressed. I can hear the caller loud and clearly. It usually occurs when I've charged my Iphone 4 battery and I've just unplug it from the wall. Sometimes it occurs while I disconnect from bluetooth device. I've already tried to touch on/off the speaker button, reset Iphone, and install last version (ios 6.1.3 10B329). If I immediately call by VIBER it works perfectly and sometimes the regular call works after that. But it's not a rule. Any idea?

This is worked for me... After all kinds of troubleshooting the problem for me was caused by google voice... (If you don't use google voice with sprint then this is not the solution) I had google voice enabled on my sprint phone number ( it wasn't the google voice app) but when someone called my phone google voice was involved one way or another... This is my best guess - I could be wrong - but since I disabled my sprint number from google voice I haven't had any problems.

A week after paying Apple for a refurbished 4S I ran into this "audio compiler" related defect.

It is described here: http://iansiphonerepair.blogspot.com/2012/05/microphone-issues-with-iphone-4.htm l

"If this audio compiler doesn't work, then the person on the other end will not hear you - or they will hear a very muffled voice, or a lot of static. Due to what is largely believed to be a manufacturing error in Apple's Chinese factories, a number of iPhone 4 models were assembled with this tiny chip soldered to the mainboard (motherboard) improperly. Either too much solder or glue was used, and the connection is tenuous at best.

The problem is that the phone could work perfectly for a very long time, and then after a drop (even one that doesn't break the glass), a hard jar, or even for no reason at all, this chip loses its connection to the mainboard and causes the problem you may have experienced."

I will return the phone to the Apple Store. Hope they believe me. It is erratic on this phone, but I'll try to catch it on video.

Assuming the manufacturing error was a cause Apple should do a recall.

J. Faughnan,

I have opened my phone numerous times and replaced the dock connector twice. Both times failed to fix the audio problem with my phone calls. People can here me blow into the phone on a call, but that is all. However, when I use voice memos the audio recorded is very faint. Should I sell my phone and assume it is the audio compiler?

Hello Daniel,

Just for your information: When my iPhone 4S was rather new, I have experienced similar problems (also posted in this forum), but after while the iPhone 4S was functioning normal and I never experienced the problem again.

I never found out what the real cause for this problem was. It may have been as simple as the SIM fixation in position.

Anyway, it's really annoying having this issue, but it doesn't mean will never operate correctly anymore due to this defect. (assuming we talk about the same cause)

I have the same issue (mic not wor only during regular call, using app like Skype, Viber etc. is work fine) and I found only hardware solution like reball the audio compiler ic.

Sometimes help well embed piece of plastic between chip and shield. This can fix connection between chip and motherboard by pressure.

I was looking for some software solution to get round this problem with audio compiler so calls will be performed in the same way like in case of Skype, Viber or any other app.

I think, this can be elegant solution... However I didn't find anything.

This is very common issue and Apple still do nothing, like the problem is not exist. I know that this is not good for reputation but be quiet is much worse!.

Am having the same problem with my iphone 4s 16 gb. My phone is about 16-18 months old and i cannot hear the caller on incoming and outgoing calls also but i can hear on Viber, Skype and other applications. Having took it for repair at my local iphone dealer in my local country but they said it cannot be repair as the circuit board is damage and also cannot be replace as the guaranty is expired and they cannot do nothing to help. Please guys tell me what should i do now with this phone?? Is there someone can help me? This is an expensive phone and i think that the service also should be reasonable for the customer.

I just purchased the iPhone 4S yesterday via Sprint (my carrier). The internet and texting work fine, but I was getting dead air for both outgoing and incoming calls. I never had an issue with my iPhone 4, even when I had it upgraded to iOS 7.0. I disabled Siri, did everything that was listed on Sprint.com and this site, and now I can make and receive calls...on speaker phone only!

It is a new 8 GB 4s, running on Sprint's network. Should I fight with Sprint for a replacement?

Hi Everyone,

I had the Same Issue and I fixed it twice with simple steps.

1. Under the phone there is one mic gap (Between 2 open mic:::::=::::::.) one in RED. Over a period of time the dust can block the mic. Clean it but using small screw driver then it will work.

or

2. Open the phone and just press the mic layer and close and it will work.

or

3. See the sound setting and max it max

Mostly it is first of second should work.
