Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Thanks for the tip on the speaker, but is just a workaround. Ihope we get a fix soon. Apple should be on this asap.

I for one would like to hear more confirmations on whether iOS 5.1 actually fixes the call audio bug???

I have the same issue. My wife threatened to never answer my calls again if I didn't take the phone back to Apple. Have an appointment today. I am interested in how they respond to this issue.

If you are reading this and you have the same problem please post here even if all you are doing is saying the same thing as everyone else.  The more responses the faster Apple will address this.

In fact this is getting big enough that maybe it's time for the media to get a hold of this.  Apple won't get excitted until this is front page news.

When you post indicate Iphone details: Memory size, OS / updates, Siri on or off, BT have you used one and if so what model, headphones do you use Apples or aftermarket.

    Iphone 4s 64

    Jawbone ERA BT

    Siri was on

    Apple headphones.

I noticed when the BT was connected that it would switch from BT to speaker while the call was being made. Definately something in the audio switching system getting messed up.

    Same problem here.

Black 4s 32GB, s/n starting with DNQGM, ordered on 29 oct, arrived on 15 nov (guess the 30 days are expired even if I used it for 2 weeks only?!).

Never had Siri on (I'm italian and Siri is not yet available in my language), never used the earphones, never used a BT headset.

On the first call (with iOS 5.0) I couldn't hear anything, thought it was just a glitch. I have made ±10 calls now and the problem showed up on a fourth of them. VERY annoying. Now on 5.1, the issue is still there.

And I'm lucky that I don't use my phone for work. But what would happen if I needed to make an emergency call? Guess I could die before anyone comes, or worse I could be fined for "prank" calling the police...

Ah, da quando è morto Steve Jobs...

    same here

    4s 16G black

    siri on

    bt off

    ios 5.0.1

20% of outgoing calls don't have incoming sound. also there is a small static noise in the background when in a normal (functional) call. hoping it's a software issue that will be solved in 5.1 (as a previous poster said) because we don't have an apple store here and Orange probably will take my phone and send it to the service (during which I'll be left without any iphone).

I have the same symptoms as described in this thread and I have been promised a new 4s as replacement. 4s 64G black, Siri on, Bt off and ios 5.0.1.

    • Sometimes no audio in outgoing call
    • Speakerphone when headset connected

If this had happened a few years ago, when there were regulatory requirements that a phone must have been type approved according to GSM/WCDMA-ETSI standards in order to be sold, Apple's conduct would likely to be illegal. To continue to deliver a product that does not work as intended or as specified by ETSI, is probably still against a number of EU directives. In short it is extremely irritating.

I am very pleased with Apple's support and how they meet me as a customer, but I am very disappointed in how Apple handles the product defect situation. For me,  they should at least have started screening (if it is a HW issue) and they should have released a SW work around. To swap phones randomly (some people in this thread report up to five exchanges) and (as it seems) continuing to ship phones without having the problem fixed or under control, is very unprofessional.

Same problem here; Audio problems with outgoing calls. I have a white iPhone 4gs 16gb, bought in the Netherlands. Hope the problem is software-related and that it will be fixed soon.

Now onto my 7th iPhone 4S's for the month! Here is the email I just sent to Sprint detailing my entire situation.

On November 1st I activated new phones under my Sprint Premier account.

    ( 2 lines --  xxx-xxx-xxxx & xxx-xxx-xxxx)

I chose to go with the iPhone 4s this time around due to the battery issue with my Android phones.

Between November 1st and November 22nd I went through 5 different iPhone's. All of these phone ended up being defective. This was a extremely difficult process each time trying to explain my issues and exchange my phone each time. Apple says they have not heard of my issue but exchanged my phone each time. I am not sure how they have not heard about it, their own site is full of complaints and major articles have been written by Cnet, macrumors, etc.. Google it.. Its a known issue

    https://www.google.com/search?aq=1&oq=iphone+4s+no+audi&gcx=w&sourceid=chrome&ie =UTF-8&q=iphone+4s+no+audio+on+outgoing+calls#sclient=psy-ab&hl=en&source=hp&q=i phone+4s+no+audio+on+outgoing+calls&pbx=1&oq=iphone+4s+no+audio+on+outgoing+call s&aq=f&aqi=g1&aql=1&gs_sm=e&gs_upl=329468l330107l1l330724l5l2l3l0l0l1l315l436l0. 1.0.1l5l0&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.,cf.osb&fp=32cab9ac8a11ce98&biw=1580&bih=95 9

This process forced me to take 3 days off of work and countless hours in the Apple Store.

Finally I called my local Sprint corporate store and Spoke with a manager. After explaining my situation, he informed me that I needed to activate my old EVO's and take the iPhones back to Apple for a full refund. Once that have been completed he could activate the upgrade phones at his location (because my eligibility would be reset). After going through the process of activating the old phones and making a trip to the Apple store for my refund I headed over to the Sprint store. I arrived at the Sprint store at 5pm. Here is the link to the store http://maps.google.com/maps?um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=sprint+westminster&fb=1&gl=us&hq=spr int&hnear=0x876b881ea2597f9f:0xa8cf57703f744417,Westminster,+CO&ei=vlfWTpuqEIf8i QLU-4WhDA&sa=X&oi=local_group&ct=image&ved=0CBMQtgM&iwloc=cids:17960267498067889 40

I sat in line for 3.5 hours waiting for my name to be called. "Finally" I am thinking this is all going to be over. NO THE CASE. Sprint manager calls customer care and National Sales Support to no avail. Time is now 9pm, I am not sure why the Sprint store sent me down this path. Nothing was accomplished. Complete waste of my time!

Sprint customer care speaks with me my entire ride home. Telling me that there is simply nothing they can do. At this point I explained that I would like to cancel my service. My call was transferred 6 times and the last Sprint rep I spoke with informed me .."Go back to Apple, we do not believe that you returned the phone. We need to speak with them" WOW! Not the answer I was looking for! The Sprint rep told me he would call me back the following day and to be at the Apple Store so he could speak with a manager himself. (as if I am a big lier and have nothing better to do)

So, I took the following day off of work knowing how crazy the Apple store is and anticipating how long this could take. Since I have already been thought 5 phones at this locations, I know how long this process could take. I am a expert at this point! Process takes 4 hours, Sprint guy calls my phone, I hand over my phone to the manger (who knows me by first and last name, as well as my life story at this point). What an embarrassing situation!

Still wanting to cancel my service I am transferred over to you Brittany. You were the first person that was human, and took time to listen to what I had just been through. I am shocked that Sprint's system did not prompt a customer service call just to see if I was still SANE at this point! I have paid Sprint over $10,000 in the last 3 years of service. Sprint service does not work were I need it to the most, so I let them put a Airvana at my location. Sprint needs my network to function correctly. My personal ISP network, part of me thinks that this is not right. Somehow I feel that Sprint should be paying me data rates for the use of my ISP (network). Whatever,.. I let this roll off my back because it makes my phones work. I live in a non-rual area, Sprint coverage maps say I am suppose to have great service (Sprint IT says I have 3 towers within 1 mile). Who knows..

Still using my EVO 4g's at this point was not a answer to my problem. I figured I would just go ahead and activate new service with a different provider. I headed to Best Buy. My strategy behind this is this.. If the service does not work, I have 14 days to take the phone back and sign up with a different provider. They carry all the big brands and all the phones. No more Apple Store or Sprint store for me, EVER AGAIN!

While at Best Buy Brittany calls me to follow up. I asked her, " What is Sprint willing to do to keep me as a customer? " ---- dead air-----  then she replies, " you are going to save the most money with Sprint". Mmmmmm this is not about money this is about SERVICE. Hello, is anybody listening??!! I replied with "If I chose to keep Sprint, are you willing to give me a service credit and waive my activation fee?" Brittany said this should not be a problem.  If I call my ISP or cable provider and tell them that I have not had service for the month, they are going to take care of me. Not make me drive all around town for weeks, or have me speak with 20 different people. Its about doing the right thing.

The easiest thing for me to do at this time was to give Sprint one more chance. Brittany was truly a Godsend and was able to get my account back inline as well as my eligibility reset.

I walked out of Best Buy an hour later with my 6th (SIXTH) and 7th (SEVENTH) exchanged iPhone 4S's  for the month of November.

I received my Sprint bill in the mail yesterday $288 and some change. A prorated amount at that!!! $72 in activation fees?! With what I have been through I am leaving it up to sprint to tell me what they are going to do about this. Based on that decision I will decide if I am keeping Sprint or going with a different provider. I still have 1 week to return my phones.

It has taken me 23 days and 7 different iPhone 4S's,.. plus an entire week off from work, just to get 2 working iPhones from Sprint. I am exhausted!

I have had the issue with two 4s phones where outgoing calls are heard by the other party, but I could not hear anything.  I could remedy that by swithcing speaker on then back off.  I installed ios 5.1 beta today & I have not had that issue at all.  Hopefully it is fixed.

To all still experiencing the issue: I feel for you.
I had swapped my 4S (once) over two weeks ago and had been without issues ever since.

Last straw for me was when I was out late in the middle of nowhere and was trying to call in a car service to take me home, and after fifth unsuccessful attempt in a row I realized that they will stop picking up on me, taking me for a prankster or something. Can't tell you how frustrating it was. And what's worse, the speaker on/off trick stopped working for me. Anyway, as I said, after the swap everything is fine.

What is killing me, is the fact that with all the returns Apple should have a gazillion of malfunctioning phones on their hands, which should make tracking down the problem a piece of cake. I don't understand, is Tim Cook completely spineless without Steve? If so it is time to start selling Apple stock, that's for sure.

I have had the same issue since day 1 - about 3 weeks ago.  Although the issue that I had relative to only being able to make calls using the speakerphone has since gone away, if I call from my contact list the issue described by everyone here occurs almost 100 percent of the time.  The only way around it is to actually dial the number using the keypad. I have installed 5.0.1 but this has not improved things one bit.  The AT&T store tells me that it is an Apple issue and they will not replace the phone.  Very frustrating indeed.

Once again, I will let you guys know, since updating to the 5.1 beta this morning, I have not experienced any of the outgoing call issues where the other party could hear and I couldn't.  Looks like it was a software issue.  Hopefully the 5.1 update will be out for all soon.
