Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

I have now got my brand new replacement 4s and so far (24h) I have not experienced any of the problem I had with my first 4s, i.e. randomly

    • No audio in incoming call
    • Audio defaults to loudspeaker when headset connected
    • No audio in BT headset

Everything works just fine with the new 4s I am still running 5.0 and will try 5.0.1 in the weekend. The only issue I have noticed is that my BT-headset lost connection twice, but connected directly again when pressing a button.

I did not se any relationship with battery power level when I had the problem.

That's brave to upgrade to 5.0.1

My money says you'll be more likely to get the problem back! I'd stay on 5.0 if it's working for now as long as you don't have battery issues.

I kept my phone fully charged most of the time.

In fact while I was having issues I plugged the phone in to my laptop to keep the phone from draining the battery while I trouble shot the problem.

When I brought my phone back to where I bought it they put a new sim card in and the phone worked properly for one phone call and then went back to not working for all other calls.

Iphone 4s 64 gig.  Black, Siri On, Jawbone BT, Apple headphones.

I just got a similar thing. I remembered I had another sim card with a different number on the same network. I swapped it over and the first few calls all went fine. I swapped back to my original sim and the issue was there on every call. Swapped to the 'new' one again and tried a few calls and sure enough the problem occured on calls to my home number.

As far as I can see this isn't a sim problem unless I have been unlucky enough to have two sims, 12 months difference in age, both of which have worked flawlessly up to 5.0.1 but now have develpoed the exact same fault.

    ***UPDATE***

Tried ringing my home number from my usual sim. It rang fine, I could hear it on my IP4S. I tried again, it rang on the IP4S, gave one ring on the landline and then it showed as being connected on my IP4S screen with the call time counter running. Nobody had picked up the land line phone. I wonder if this isn't a 'false connection' issue rather than a straight forward sound problem.

Going to try a few more times and see if I can replicate.

Follow up to my message at:

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16627238#16627238

One month into the replacement phone and the phone still works with NO malfunctioning. This replacement phone was a "black box", no charger, no headphones phone, got from the Apple store. My impression is that these phones are tested "better" than the retail phones in the original box.

The only small annoyance is that when using the phone, there is a 1 second mic silence period after which the mic is audible but I trained myself to say hello with a ... delay of 1 sec . Otherwise I would need to say hello 2-3 times if I do it fast but the call will always work (unlike with my original phone).

Battery life is significantly improved. I unplug the phone from charger at 8AM and plug it in at around 10PM. By the time I plug it in, I am at 50%. This is with 6 pop email accounts fetching, pushing and with a exchange account set to push, location services on, SIRI on, 3G on and so ... on

Everything on this replacement phone works flawlessly and I could not find anything to complain about.

I have 2 iP4S and only 1 has this NO AUDIO problem with INCOMING CALLS and OUTGOING CALLS (these calls happen 70% of the time).  The one having the problem is running 5.0.1 stock, and i managed to help identify if the CALL is a NO AUDIO call by pressing the MIC MUTE button.  If the MUTE button stays muted then the call is fine, but if the MUTE button unmute itself immediately then that call is a NO AUDIO call.  To quickly fix this during the call, i would press the FACETIME button and let it load the front camera then immediately END the facetime call at the bottom.  This fixes the NO AUDIO problem 100% (up to this point), so i guessing its a 5.0.1 bug?

My other iP4S is running 5.0 stock, and has no issue at all.

Can anyone confirm if this above detect/fix method also works for you?

OK after sitting and ringing my home number (the landline phone is right next to me) I can get it to randomly do a half ring and then it connects WITHOUT BEING PICKED UP!!

My IP4S does one ring in the earpiece then makes a sort of 'peep' sound and stops ringing. The call time counter starts and it's connected...I can pick up the landline (after it's stopped ringing) and the connection is live and will remain that way until I hang up the IP4S. This is very random, I had a long run of calls that worked perfectly then the issue occured once or twice. I also had every other call doing it.

I'm not sure if this helps but perhaps if others try ringing a number they have control of too and we can see if it is the same 'silent' issue or if in fact it's a forced connection issue. Without hearing what the phone you are ringing is actually doing it would be easy to interpret this as a silent ring issue.

Since i was able to fix all my NO AUDIO calls with my method, so is this a SOFTWARE bug or a faulty iphone that i should go exchange?

I want to add to my earlier post,

I was also able to fix the NO AUDIO CALL problem by pressing SPEAKER twice on the phone instead of pressing FACETIME. (Both methods worked for me).

So should i go call Apple and ask to exchange my phone (arrived yesterday), or is this a KNOWN software that is being worked on?

On my iphone 4s. The problem seems to occurs when the "cellular data" option is off.

Does someone has the same feeling?

It's just ******* me off that this issue is so widely experienced (this thread alone has 80,000+ posts) and yet no acknowledgement from Apple.  This morning my phone had this issue for 20+ calls, trying over and over to connect to a conference bridge and trying to receive incoming calls.  I eventually gave up and went with Skype to do my work.

I have made an appointment at Genius bar today; I'm fed up.  If it was a minor feature, I could understand.  But it's the most important and critical component - the PHONE itself.  Arrgggg.

Last thing I tried was restoring to factory defaults and set up as a new phone (no backup).

Tried some calls and the issue occured again.

Setup my old 3GS upgraded to iOS 5.0.1 and everything works.

So I don`t think it is software or maybe some combination of SW and some 4s devices.

Called Apple and will send the phone in next week to get it repaired/replaced.
