Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

I agree, I had an issue with my wife's iphone 4.  Her phone's microphone stopped working but only for out going calls.  I went to the Genius Bar and was told that the issue was in fact present on the phone (they were able to replicate what I was telling them).  The Genius said that it was a problem with the logic board in the phone and since I was out of warranty and I didn't have apple care and wasn't eligible for an upgrade yet that I needed to pay $150 for a new iPhone 4.

Mind you, the microphone worked fine for the record app as well as different applications.  The phone was the only thing that the mic didnt work for.

I am pretty sure that there was no problem with the logic board and that it was an iOS 5.0.1 issue, i feel like I was taken for $150 for no good reason.

Had the same issue with my AT&T 16gb white 4S. Had the problem right out of the box. The Best Buy I bought it from didn't have more in stock to swap it. I tried restoring from backup and restoring as new. Problem persisted. Went to local apple store to get it checked. Of course the problem didn't occur when they tested it, but I used one of the display MacBook airs to show him this long thread and he swapped it out, no questions asked. The new phone has not messed up once, even after calling my home phone about 60 times in a row trying to make it act up. Definitely a hardware issue in my opinion. If you went to the store you bought it from and the swapped phone has the same issues, try going to a different store to swap (if possible).  Good luck for all of you having this problem, seems like a bad manufacturer batch, which isn't that uncommon with devices...

What firmware is your replacement on? 5.0 or 5.0.1?

I took my iPhone 4s back to Carphone warehouse and explained that I had a problem with no audio with outgoing calls and they said that they hadn't heard of the issue. I was able to reproduce the problem while in store and was told that they would have to send the phone to apple, which could be 3-4 weeks! I would have to buy an adapter so that I could use my old Samsung while the phone was away. I told them that I would check to see if there was a sw update that would fix the issue, but the longer this has gone on it doesn't look like it is a sw issue. I have no choice but to send off, very disappointing, especially as there is no comment from apple on this, as it is obviously a wide spread issue.

I went to the Apple store and got a replacement phone around the middle of October and this did not fix the issue.  I am still having the same problem with the outgoing/incoming calls randomly not having any audio.  Sometimes I cannot hear them and other times the person I called cannot hear me.  I am really hoping that this is a software issue because I really do not want to deal with driving over an hour again to swap out the phone a second time.  This still happens with phone, headphones, and bluetooth.

I have a AT&T 32GB 4s and the problem switches from no audio on outgoing and then the phone forces calls to speaker. Contacted APPLE and they said try going to AT&T and switching SIM cards, but with a thread 73 pages in the making I'm not crazy. The APPLE rep said this forum represents a small fraction of phone users. WEIRD. SMH

Just went to the Genius bar, demonstrated the problem, and got a replacement phone (new) right away.  Am setting it up as a new phone (not a restore) as we speak... will see if that addresses it.

If you don't restore, don't you need to set everything up again?

Bennybeanbag, the replacement had 5.0 when I got it, then upgraded to 5.0.1 no issues with either firmware...

Yes.  That is a pain but I want to make sure that if it's software related that I'm not starting from a corrupted backup.  New phone, clean install - seems like a reasonable way of seeing if I get another clunker.

Also if you have everything on your iTunes, just go through the tabs when you plug in the phone and select everything you had on the old phone to go on the new one. I have a pc so iTunes runs slow, but it only took 45 minutes to completely reinstall all of my pics, video, music, and apps (about 10GB of stuff). So not too much of a headache...

Well this *****, after changing the sim and setting up from new the phone seemed to be working fine. I could not be bothered to set up all my Apps in folders and email accounts etc so I decided to restore the phone from a backup and now the problem has returned.

Seriously thinking of Android or Windows mobile phone.

That's what I was afraid of. I really don't understand how a backup can cause outgoing call no audio or static or other issues! Does that mean a software upgrade can really help?
