Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

I decided to reset the phone and set up as new; I also decided to disable Siri when the option came up. I have now been using the phone for a day and a bit with no problems when making a call; also the battery life seems significantly better, I have used it for 23 hours and still at 60%.

It may just be a coincidence so I would be interested if anyone has any thoughts.

I cannot believe so many owners are gullibile in keeping the iphone with all its issues and hoping that a fix is coming down the road.  I would have sent it back day one, and tell Apple once its actually fixed, than you purchase again and not until then.  Keep the old phone and wait it out, not keep the new iphone 4s, praying it will work again.  You paid too much money on this not to have a fully working cell phone.

"gul li ble |ˈgələbəl| adjective easily persuaded to believe something; credulous: an attempt to persuade agullible public to spend their money."

    AKA:  Real dumb

UPDATE: tried reset/restore just to see how the procedure works (because if I'm getting a replacement I will have to do that anyway).

I set it up as a new phone.

Of course it didn't work. The problem is still there.

Get a replacement. Resetting/restore is just for fun.

If disabling Siri is the solution to making the iPhone 4S work as well as the predecessor iPhone 4, then what was the whole point of the iPhone 4S? We know that the iPhone 4 could theoretically run Siri as well. Sad.

    iPhone 4S, 32Gb.

On 5.0.1 — SMS - No, Check ballance - No, Call - 10/90%, no SIM etc

iOs 5.1b — Everything works as it should! iPhone baseband updated to 1.02.1-1 (beta, but it works)

Guys, to upgrade to 5.1b you do not need developer account! Just download the firmware iPhone4,1_5.1 (search it in google or something) and remove SIM card from device before updating. Then click Check for Update in iTunes with ALT button (on Mac, I think is SHIFT on Windows), select the downloaded firmware and update. No activation is needed for me. My crappy phone began working as a telephone. In 2011. The Phone. Rings. Again. OMG.

I agree that disabling Siri would seem to negate the point of the 4S but right now I am more interested in a working phone. I need to make more calls to see if the fault recurs.

Ok.  So after arguing with the guy at the Apple Store on how widespread the problem is and causing a bit of a scene I got what I wanted and he got what he wanted.

He says that it sounds like software.  I said well it sounds like some people have had to get several hardware replacements before finally getting rid of the problem.  He says he will do a one time hardware replacement.  I said no... That is not how you are going to word it.  You will replace my phone until I get a working one.  I didn't pay 300 dollars for the phone and 100 for extra AppleCare protection to be told I get a 1 time hardware replacement.  He said "well what do i need to do to satisfy you".  I said if you want me to follow the steps I will follow your steps go ahead wipe the phone but if it doesn't work I am replacing until I get a working phone.  He said he didn't mean it would be a 1 time hardware replacement that I could replace as many times after that but it would go through Apple online or something.  I said to him that this is fair because I am agreeing to what he thinks but he is giving me options if this doesn't work.  Told him I work in IT for a living and that his opinion on the phone app freezing up to me sounds wrong.

Tried a complete restore set up as new phone.  So far it is working.

If it fails it will happen I am making calls at different intervals and keeping an inventory.  I will post back with updates daily.

Sorry to say I disagree.  As far as I can see there is no concensus whether this is software or hardware.  So you get a hardware replacement with a different OS install on it.  This could very well be a bug triggered in the software due to the order in which features are configured depending on the user.  Right now my phone works perfeclty other than this one issue and I am very happy with it.  Again I will post back with updates if the problem comes back or stays away daily.

Had my white 16gb 4s on O2 (UK) for about a month now and I'm also having this issue with around 1/10 calls. I can see the counter, people can hear me, yet all I hear is silence!

It appears Apple don't want another recall like they had with the 4 (signal issues) as I'm yet to find any response from someone within their ranks.

I've reported this to O2 already and if it persists I'm going to have them send me another phone out. I didn't really want to take the plunge on the 4s but my 3GS was lagging behind and god only knows when they'll release the 5! What I do know is that as soon as they do, I'll be selling my 4s immediately. It's a good job for them that they started the smart phone revolution, although I fear that it won't be long until you'll only be paying for the name. If I have this issue again I might even consider replacing it for a galaxy s2... Apple need to admit this is a serious fault (76 pages on their own forums proves that). Come on Apple, either tell us you can fix it, or give us our money back. I can watch TV, auto update via iCloud and speak text messages, but can't do the most basic function and make calls? It's a joke!

It seems that the issue just gradually gets worse.   The phone sat in my gym locker for an hour and a half after I had it supposedly fixed.  Was fine after that.  All I have done is turn off wifi, bluetooth.  So far I have been able to replicate the problem two more times.  Going back to have fun with the Apple Store reps tomorrow.  Will just make a stink that they will replace this until it is right.

My original 4s was doing this. I would place a call and sometimes it worked and others it wouldn't until I pressed the speaker. Apple techs kept telling me to restore. When I called last week, they told me to make a genius appointment. I did. The genius told me he didn't believe me and gave me a black box replacement. He had me make one call to see if it worked. It worked fine. Ithen took it home and synced my contacts, apps, and did the upgrade like the tech told me to do. I did not use it after I did all of that. I did use it today. The first call I made, I heard nothing at all. When I tried again, I heard myself and it sounded like I was talking into a tin can. I tried again and it worked. I then called Apple again. I had trouble, but finally got through and talked with a tech supervisor. (Or so I was told.) He told me I shouldn't be having the same issue with the replacement phone. I agree. He then told me to do a reset on this phone and set it up as new. If it didn't help, to take it in and have them give me a brand new phone and not a black box replacement. That really makes me think despite what I was told at the store, that I got a remanufactured phone. I placed two calls after the clean reset and they seemed to work. So I guess I'll wait and see. I am disappointed.

I am also having the same issue. My phone enables the speaker phone on its own and when i try to disable the speaker phone there is no sound from the handset.

Every time i try to make a call, there is a echo and the timer starts but the person on the other end cant hear my voice.

Further to my above message I today contacted Apple and the guy I spoke to said this was a fault that they are aware of, yet will not admit to on these forums. In fairness to the guy I spoke with, he said he gets one of these calls every single day and understands my concerns. He'd clearly been told what he could and couldnt say! I've now been advised to book an appointment in my nearest apple store (50 miles away), where they will arrange a replacement handset and renew my 3 month warranty. I asked if it was a bad batch (hardware issue) or a software fault. He confirmed IT IS A HARDWARE FAULT that they knew about. I now have to make a journey to meet a geek to get a new phone. If they know this is a fault, I don't see why they don't just send me one... Especially considering my current phone has no more functionality than an iPod! If this replacement doesn't work, I'm getting a Samsung Galaxy.

Spoke to Apple today.  They admitted it was a fault.  I get a hardware replacement not a refurnibished phone.  The new batch should be ok that is out there now.  They get calls every day.  This is all i wanted to know.  What fault is it software or hardware.  Now we know.
