Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Agreed.  I am curious what your serial is.  Mine starts with C39G so far the new one has been working just fine.  However my last phone started with a D in the serial.  I am curious if yours starts with a C to.  So far I have seen no pattern in the forums but would be interested to know.

I've been reading this thread on and off for about 2 weeks. I'm trying to decide whether or not I should replace the hardware or wait for the software update. I wouldn't mind replacing the hardware, but I just assumed there would be a wait for the 64gb version especially around the holidays so that's holding me back a bit also. I could wait wait for the software update, but who knows when that will be and plus nobody knows for sure if it is hardware or software related.

However I'm mainly here to reply to LfGrdMike's post. My phone starts with C39GJ and it has had the issue of having no audio on outgoing calls since I got the phone. So if your phone does end up being a good, working unit, I don't think it's based on those first 4 characters.

Apple has replacements behind the counter specific for these situations.  I suggest you get a replacement.  That Apple rep had heard of this problem and it does sound like a bad batch or something.  Don't know for sure but she did say get a hardware replacement.  So they must know something is going on.  Good luck!

I am on hold waiting to talk to a supervisor about this problem. I am on my second phone. This one was in a black box behind the genius desk. I think it is a remanufactured phone, not a new one. It seems odd to have two with similar problems. I will see what this supervisor says. I am disappointed.

I called Apple directly to ensure that I would get a new one.  Also made sure of it with the Store genius. They made certain of it.  The thing is they keep them in different boxes because they won't give you a new USB cable etcetera with them.

So far my new one is working great.  My old one would of definitely failed by now.  I will just keep getting this replaced until I get a working one if needed.  However I am hoping this one fixes it.  Still crossing my fingers no problems so far.  Been making calls like crazy to my work phone.

Waiting for the supervisor. He told me at the beginning that it seemed strange that two phones would have the problem. He is looking into the fact that he thinks it is the SIM card. I don't think that it is. I am tired and frustrated with this whole mess.

The only other thing I can say is.  You can also tell the guy this.  It sounds like some people have had to go through several replacements.  As crappy as that is.  This is why I wish Apple would just come out with it already.  At this point the problem is already getting media coverage so what difference does it make.

Heard from the supervisor. He thinks it has to do with the SIM card. He got AT&T to send me a new SIM card. He told me when it comes to put it in and see if that fixes the issue. He gave me his name and number if this doesn't work. He did tell me that he had tried to call my phone back and it went straight to voicemail instead of ringing. I was not on the phone at all, because I was waiting for him. Others told me they had the same problem getting in touch with me. I had disregarded this when they told me. AT&T also sent an update of some sort to my phone. I will wait and see if the new card helps the problem or if it continues. I will let you know.

I just want to say. REPLACE THE PHONE. I had a white 4s 64Gb that I had problems with. I had serveral different problems and I am sure that all the different problems with echo, fail ougoing calls, bluetooth etc etc is the same fault in the phone and it just differs from person to person because of how you use the phone.

I changed my phone after 4 weeks because of problems with the wired headset and with the bluetooth handsfree in my car. I also had the problem where I needed to switch on and off the speaker to get my outgoing call to work without headset.

I now have had my new phone for about 2 weeks, and I have not had one single problem with it. It also has about 25% better batterylife. I am a very heavy user so I now that this new phone is OK.
One thing that I noticed when I got the new phone is that it feels like it runs smoother. I did not notice anything on the faulty 4s until I got the new one and maybe its just my imagination but the phone "works better" in a way hard to explain cause I'm swedish and my english is not that good:-)

And I did a full restore from the backup from the 4s that didn't work and I have the same SIM card that I had in the old 4s.

I just wanted to say to all of you wondering to wait for a software update. Don't!

For what it is worth, I got a replacement phone after experiencing problems with the phone auto-selecting speaker when I was using ear buds/mic. The genius put the Sim card from my old phone in the new one. I've been working trouble-free for sometime now.

This leads me to believe that the problem is not with the Sim card.

The new phone has been working great for the past couple of weeks. No problems.

What firmware version is your replacement and what version was the faulty one?

I'm pleased for anyone who replaces and no longer has the problem but it would help no end if when posting these good news stories you all include the firmware versions so we can collate all the variables and see if there is any commonality in the solution.

Completely useless. I have on my iPhone 4s , serial DNVGL96 etc. Used in 2 coutries with 3 different providers (=3 different SIMs). All the same.

I honestly don't think it is the SIM.  Here is why.  I am on Verizon and the SIM won't kick in unless I go outside the USA.  I could be wrong though and would be interested to know if this helps your problem.  Apparently Verizon's activiation system is the worst.  Took the guy a while to activate my phone.  Sprint and AT&T have a better system.  It gets finicky with the sim card.  Again though since this is spread accross the board for all carriers I don't think this is the issue.  I think you are just getting a run around.  Demand a new phone is what I would do.  I bet the bad batch is out there and thats why some people are getting bad phone replacements.  KNow what I mean.  Your serial also matches the one on my old phone.  However I see no pattern with this unless we can tell where the phone was manufactured.

So far so good my phone even makes the call quicker without a delay.
