Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Sorry, I thought that it was clear that it was no difference in the firmware. The old one had 5.0 and upgraded to 5.01 with the same problems. The new one came with 5.0 and I updated the firmware myself to 5.01. No difference between the phones.
    If that answers your question?

I'm following this discussion for quite a time now.

I'm software and hardware engineer just to explain my qualification.

I had this problem from the very beginning. I naturally thought it might be a software problem, in fact I was sure it is one, cause it only happened on outgoing calls, and the speaker turn on/off has fixed it all the time.

    It was firmware Version 5.0

I waited for firmware 5.01 and hoped it will fix the problem. It has not!

I found this forum and noticed, that only exchanging the phone solved the problem for the others having the problem. I still believed it might be a software problem.

However I called Apple Care and they said I should reset and all the stuff, I have already done.

    I resetted the phone

I put it back in factory defaults

I deleted everything and put it back to factory settings

    No change.

I finaly got a replacement phone, and the problem disappeared. Same firmware (both tested 5.0 and 5.01) factory settings, my backup, everything fine.

I also insered the same sim card.

So to all out there still having this problem, and hoping for a software fix

It is definately a hardware problem! I'm sure it might be possible to fix it by software, but it is a hardware fault! Its for sure not a single hardware fault, it's a combination of problems. In production there are some kind of tolerances, which are normal. If you got such a phone, it seems that several circumstances of tolerances need to meet to cause this problem. Maybe a earphone speaker needing a little more power to turn on, and an other sensor which is already overloaded. You know what I mean? When all tolerances are on the bad side, this problem does apear.

I'm clear that is sounds and feels like a software problem, but it is not! Maybe Apple will be able to fix it by software (changing the timing, fe. give the speaker more time to turn on) but it is and stays a hardware which is out of the calculated tolerances.

My simple advice, get an exchange phone and your problems will be gone. Apple Care has an excellent exchange policy, so use it and exchange your faulty phone.

I'm writing this, cause the problem has driven me nuts, and I'm so happy after the exchange!

    just my 2 cents!

No problem man.  We need the cooperation of the entire Apple community since Apple isn't doing a thing about this.

    501 Build 9A405

    Carrier Verizon 11.2

    Model MD243LL

    Serial: C39G....

    Modem Firmware 1.0.13

This time I turned Diagnostics off as Apple couldn't find the problem with it on so useless.  Today I turned wifi off i have been gradually adding one thing at a time... So now the phone is configured the way I usually have it.  Including the fact I used it on the car stereo this morning through AUX

I also want to note first call I had on October 14th was silent... Guys maybe they were out in the cold too long I live in the Northeast joking... But seriously I thought nothing of it because I was in a bad reception area.  I did have a strange issue during activation and sometimes i wonder if it has something to do with that process...  Maybe this is why the new phones are fixing the problem...  I wish I could remember specifically what that problem was.

Also when i say silent call.. It appeared the call went through timer kept ticking.... Could hear nothing.

I was wrong and as an iOS developer i was pretty sure it would be software.  However I strongly feel this is not the case...  I have even noticed my raise to speak isn't as finicky now... On my last phone it was not working that good.  I still think it could be a sensor glitch in the hardware but who knows.

I will keep everyone posted on my hardware replacement.  Again so far so good.

The only other thing I can say is.  You can also tell the guy this.  It sounds like some people have had to go through several replacements.  As crappy as that is.  This is why I wish Apple would just come out with it already.  At this point the problem is already getting media coverage so what difference does it make.

The iPhone 4S wiki page Problems section has been updated to include the "No audio on outgoing calls" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone_4S#Problems but I think a more detailed description would be helpful for potential buyers and existing owners.

    Another update:

I have been trying out my new phone (AT&T, 16GB, Black) I got after paying $30 shipping (I would rather pay $30 than go to the snobby Apple store geniuses to waste more of my time). I haven't had any problems so far, I restored from my old phone's backup and updated the OS to 5.0.1.

I think that a lot of people do not know that they have an issue, I told my colleague about the audio issue a few weeks back as he has a 4s and he said his phone was fine. However I told him that the audio issue was wide spread and he said that he had made calls recently where he thought that they hadn't connected, and now he thinks it the same audio issue. He is on 5.0.1, the same as me. I also noticed that others have had issues with the speaker being activated when using headphones, so I tested using my apple headphones and my speakers are being activated. I will go back to the store I bought the phone from and hopefully get a replacement that works!

I am having the audio problems still.  Make a call, shows connected, but I can't hear it dialing and can't hear person I am calling.  They can hear me.  Apple replaced the phone once, got new sim card, restored, updated OS all to no avail.  Now when I am having a conversation, the person on the other end can hear me fine at the beginning, but after a few minutes, the volumn fades, and I have to hang up and call back.

I am amazed that Apple has not addressed these issues.  I wonder if it's time for someone to start talking class action lawsuit. I wonder why Consumer Reports has not weighed in yet.  I only have a few days left on my 30 return policy, and just can't decide what to do.  Had 2g and 3 g for years without these problems.

Take it back.  Trust me... Also your phone is under warranty and you would still get a replacement.

Agreed.  A lot of people don't realize it because it doesn't happen on every call just the initial.  I think a lot of people would just shrug it off.

My replacement is working fantastic still.  I have had it for almost 24 hours and would of had 40% failed calls by now otherwise.

As much as I like Apple it angers me that they don't say much.  Lets just keep telling the media about it... Eventually they will say something.

To be honest I should of asked for more than a new phone.  Perhaps compensation for my screen protector.  Perhaps everyone here that paid 30 bucks should be compensated back for the shipping costs.

This is what makes me mad is the way Apple is handling it... Granted the Apple Store cooperated without a hitch yesterday I still had to go through a load of bull initially.

**** even a 25 dollar iTunes gift card would of been nice to offer for the trouble... Of course not though.  Especially if htey don't even know why some of the hardware is failing.  They might have to replace my phone sevearl more times... Just ordered a Zagg Invisible Shield.  I bought this case and love the screen protector but can't purchase it separately.

For those of you that had replacements so far and had your replacement stop working?  Generally how long until you found out it was not working properly with the replacement.  I am curious as to if this is something that may develop over time with the faulty phones.

So far mine is still good.

That is now 2 days since resetting phone, setting up as new and disabling Siri in the setup and I have not had a single recurrence of the problem. Previously 1 in 4 calls were affected and now I have made 40 odd calls with no reoccurrence.

It may be coincidence but it may also be that Siri was causing the problem; it would certainly do no harm for anyone else affected to give it a try.
