Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

That is true.  We would need someone with a phone that has that problem to set it up as a new iPhone after a restore... Do not restore from backup.  Then this individual would then proceed with Siri off etcetera.  I don't think it is Siri though but worth a shot...

Either way I bought the phone for Siri and becuase i love the iPhone experience.  so to me this is not an option regardless if Siri is in beta.

It certainly worked for me. Losing Siri is not a big issue for me as processor and camera were more important.  I will let you know if problem recurs.

I will say my raise to speak works much better on the new phone... This is why it makes me wonder if it was some sort of a sensor glitch.  Here is an example.

After waking the phone up it would take a few tries to get Raise to Speak to work.  I posted a blog post actually about the resolution I came up with.  Basically you have to hold the phone chest level and use a quick motion to make it work.  However with this new phone I don't have to use as quick of a motion and it always works on first attempt...

This could be a separate issue but maybe a sensor isn't kicking in for the phone to know that it is supposed to get audio and it  is the same sensor used in raise to speak...

    Replacement worked for me.

If you can get a replacement do it!

I didnt want to wait until 5.1, who knows how long that will  take

I agree with the previous commentor if this is fixed by software 5.1 for example it likely still is a resolution around a hardware problem.  This might be why Apple has not said anything.  Come on Apple any time now?

Let me chime in. I got my first ever iPhone (4S) last week, waited until now because I thought it would be stable by then (after Antennagate). It came preloaded with iOS 5.0.1 and the serial number starts with DNPG. I live in Luxembourg, so it's a GSM phone.

More often than not, I cannot hear anything on outgoing calls. Incoming calls work fine. Disabling Siri or Bluetooth doesn't help. Since there were big problems with 5.0.1 and LuxGSM (my operator) SIM cards, I made sure I got one that was supposed to work fine.

Since the telephone is the least used feature on my iPhone I'm going to wait for a software fix and, more important, a statement from Apple.

Add this to my MBA's wireless problems, and this makes me a quite unhappy Apple user for the time being.

Ok, so update for me. After living with this problem for some time and doing a lot of research on it, I really decided the problem was almost definitely hardware related. Several people throughout this long thread and elsewhere talked to a few apple reps who were aware of the problem and said that it was a hardware problem related to the audio reciever switching component that switches from earpiece to speaker to headset, but that apple was not going to take a public position on the issue, and just deal with people on a one to one basis. Don't quote me on this, that is my personal position but its culled from spending more hours researching this problem then I'd like to think about honestly.

Today I went to the Apple store and switched my phone. Did extensive testing on the audio on outgoing calls, plugged in and out an 1/8 inch cable, which sometimes will trigger the problem. Audio was fine. I was just about to leave the mall when I noticed... big blue splotch on my screen, right in the middle right side of the screen. Tried cleaning the screen, but it was obvious that it was a screen defect (I'm a motion graphic designer, sensitive to screen defects in cameras and monitor media). I couldn't believe it. Waited another 45 minutes to see another genius, and the phone was replaced again. Screen looks good, about 40 calls, no problem, plugging audio cable in and out, nothing seems to be triggering an audio problem. I still can't believe that I got a second defective phone. Just confirms to me how shoddy the QC on these phones is. Anyhow, my 3rd 4s seems defect free so far. I will report back if I encounter another problem.

I tried to live with the problem for a month, waiting for word from apple (don't hold your breath), but over time my phone was just more and more frustrating, and in my mind I just started seeing it as a broken/faulty device. I wasn't going to settle on that sentiment towards a device that I'm so intimitely tied to. Replace your phone, but test, test, test, and inspect the new phone to death! Someone said that the estimates are something like 1/10 phones have some kind of defect, major or minor, and tons of people are just living with these defects.

Apple returned my iPhone. Said they could not reproduce the issue.

I set it up as a new iPhone. Did NOT restore my backup and set up everything new.

    Tried some calls, same issue.

Saturday I have an appointment at the Apple Store, I want a replacement.

This is total bull### of Apple, seriously.

I had to call them directly.... Told them look at the forum and the media is getting a gist of this... They then admitted it... Told me to go to my nearest Apple Store.  I told them I wanted a brand new one.  No refurnbished piece of crap.  That seemed to work.  At this point they need to cut it out people aren't makign this up.  It is however difficult to always produce the problem on the fly.

iphone 4s, 16GB, experienced same issues in this thread. I also noticed static noise in some calls.

I went to Apple store and got a black box replacement. The replacement phone worked for less than half a day and I started to notice no audio problem again. I held on to the replacement phone for two weeks and read this thread everyday, hoping to see some response or resolution from Apple. I finally returned the phone last night before the 30 day return expires.

I am strongly considering getting the Consumerist in on this issue.  Especially since Apple won't do anything about it and leaving so many people in the dust.  It is not right.

Called Apple Support. They advised a factory restore, which I have done, but the problem persists in 1 out of 8 calls. Toggling the speaker on and off does rectify the problem but only for that call. The rep at Apple said they were aware of the issue and she added that they think it is a software issue due to its intermittent nature, after stating that if it happened all of the time then it would likely point to a hardware problem. M'kay.

I will call again tomorrow to update them on the results and the speaker workaround, and then see if they suggest returning it or hanging on for an update. I will post their advice here when I have it.

(This problem + the iPad2 wi-fi dropping problem... and all in a country with no Apple support offices... yay Apple!)

I take that to mean they don't know what it is.  I was told hardware problem.

I bought 6 iPhone 4s for myself and my staff. Everyone except 1 is experiencing call problems where an out going call us made, but there is no sound or ring tone. When recipient caller answers the time starts ticking away and they can hear us but not the other way round. Then have to recall, but often it would need one or two attempts.
