Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Well, looks like I may just need to take mine into the Apple store.  I had every one of my calls to my wife today, fail on the first attempt, about 4 times.  I tired the speaker on/off thing, that that fixed it, but only for that call.

So, my question, a little off topic, but how do you make sure that your phone is wiped before getting the new one?  Don't really want to leave pictures, email, etc. on the phone I give back to them.

I have the same issue with my 4S on Telus. Phone is only 2 days old. However I figured out that the problem is the headphone connector.  I plugged in a cable to connect my iphone to a stereo and everything worked fine. Once I disconnected it I no longer get audio when making a call. I have turned off the phone and turned it back on. Tried several things and this is how I know it is the jack. When I connect the headset that came with the iPhone and make a call it immediately goes to speaker.  WHile I am listening to the audio through the speaker I remove the headset and now I have no audio at all.  Something is shorting out somewhere.  Looks like this could be a serious design flaw.

I had the same problems (switching to speaker phone, outgoing calls not connecting or can't hear other party, outgoing calls failed, etc.).  I put my iphone in DFU mode, then restored as a new iPhone and the problem, at least on my phone, and at least at this time, is solved.

I wish that would work for me. I have restored it 3 times now and still have the issue.

"We are maybe a couple of thousand who have this problem..."???

There are only 122 posts here, and many many multiple posts by same person.

I completely agree with your premise that this is a minor issue, but don't agree with your math.

In any event, for those who are wondering, replacement is working fine in all respects.

Took mine to the Apple Store today and they swapped it without question once I told them the issue.  Sounds like it's a common complaint.

First replacement had a bad screen (when I pressed on it you could see the LCD ripple).  I'd recommend fully testing IN THE STORE before you walk out.  It was a 20 minute drive back for me.

    Thanks..

I am just willing to bet that everyone reporting this issue has plugged either the included headphones into the iPhone or some other sort of headphone/cable into the iPhone. Myself and several others I have spoken to did not have this issue until using the headset port.

I have NEVER plugged anything into the iPhone besides the charging cable and I have this problem.  I am going to the Apple Store tomorrow to hopefully get another phone since that seems to be the answer to this problem.

    Thanks..

I have never plugged a headset into my phone either and I have this issue with it. It seems to be the early release phones that are more common. I did a factory reset to wipe any software issues and it was good for about 5 hrs and back to the no audio. Called apple back and they are sending me a replacement.

apple store tech support told me there is

something wrong with the receiver. i have two

iphone 4s and one has no problem and have used headset

without problem. this could be poor manufacturing process

or bad component. i already called att for replacement

    phone (brand new).

A regular restore didn't work for me either.  I had to put the phone in DFU mode first, then do a restore as a new iphone.  That eliminated the problem entirely.

THanks to this thread I sent my hardware iPhone 4s

Back. I got the replacement in 24 hours. They put a hold of 760.00 on my credit card.

I understand some of you will not be able to do it that way. The replacement is perfect

IT took 50 mins on phone and 2 advisors who claimed they know nothing about this.

MIne was white 32gig.  I don't think after reading thus thread it makes any difference which phone

I do think it's a hardware issue. I've had all iPhones from beginning.

I have restored jail break take apart every iPhone

    THis is 100%

DEfective hardware problem. It freaked me out.

THe replacement is even faster browser and better battery life

WHich still ***** compared to my iPhone   But better then the first one from china

THat they replaced in 24 hours with the 760.00

HOld on my credit card. I sent my old one back in 24 hours and my credit card

WIll be released of the hold.  This is total crap!

LIke some of the others have said here don't take no for an answer

GEt a new one.  I'll be suprised if there is a software fix

FOr this. This is crazy and a very big story. Leo the tech guy someone should tell him

SPread the word those of you that can. I'm so ****** off I can't control myself.

I can barely write this. However I feel I owe the others here to tell my story

SOmeone else pick up the pace and pressure on apple for a press release

I hope this helps.  Again I did everything restores

OVer and over 4 times and all it took was a 50 min phone call keeping my cool and having 769.00 $$

ON a credit card for a hold until they got back Their junk.

    NOw I'm happy I didn't wait a day longer

PS I did this and it did not work for me

    FRom above post

NOT for me that did not work

I also agree with this post

TEst the replacement before leaving store

I don't know what I would have done if this one was messed up and they were

HOlding my 760.00 bucks and I had 2 defects

    PRaise god! Lol

    IM out
