Q: iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing.  Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue?  I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

I bet my 5c that this problem is caused by uninitialized variables. It is partly random and dependent on HW, ie different hardware initializes the variable to different values. And it seems that it can be solved with a SW change.

I had this problem but have now had my iPhone replaced. The problem has now completely disappeared. I have used my new 4s in one week. I'm running iOS 5.0, Modem firmware is 1.0.11, 64G, and both are from serial DNPG ... I use the phone in Sweden in Telenor's network.

same issue here; its quite annoying and very rude to anyone I'm calling, as sometimes they hang up and are frustrated. especially problematic with business calls. if this issue persists will have to ask for replacement immediately.

It's only partly true that the problem is getting media coverage. See CNN iReport article "CNN Gives Apple Free Pass on Huge iPhone 4S FAIL" http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-714099

In fact, CNN, HuffPost and NYT have never covered it, even almost 2 months after the iPhone 4S release. This has been a problem since day 1!

The only other thing I can say is.  You can also tell the guy this.  It sounds like some people have had to go through several replacements.  As crappy as that is.  This is why I wish Apple would just come out with it already.  At this point the problem is already getting media coverage so what difference does it make.

so what's the solution so far? Go through the hastle of changing the phone (to maybe have a fixed one and maybe have other problems etc) or wait for 5.1? I think the best thing is to keep this forum active as much as possible. it seems though that some people get it fixed via changing the actual phone, rather than the software (though changing the phone itself automatically gives you 'new software') so i worry that 5.1 wont fix it. plus it really is a big hastle when making important calls.

so you're suggesting its a software thing? Have you made tons of calls with the 5.1 installed? any idea when it will be released to public?

Shame on Apple keeping silence... But, if you know that next call is really important, then dial number, wait a while and press twice speaked button.

I do the same waiting for 5.1 release.

yes but at times im very busy and not concentrating, and at times i forget because im in the middle of something. in any case when i get a free moment im calling apple to have them fix or replace it. if they had issued a release that they are aware of the problem and fixing it, then id wait, but they havent, so maybe to them its not a problem, hence my phone is 'broken' and they're not fixing the software ie i need new hardware. its their loss.

Sorry, but why TONNS? I think TENS is enough...

I'l personally sure by 99% this is "software" bug. As a former engeneer in radioelectronic, I know many magic bugs in even ten times less complicated devices...

Just got my Verizon iPhone 4S last night at the Apple Store - I'm having the same issue. iOS 5.0.1 came pre-installed. I did factory restore and still have the problem.

Tapping speaker phone on/off does take care of the issue but I'm tiring of doing this before every outgoing call. Incoming calls work fine.

I wrote a nice email to Tim Cook. I'm sure emails about specific issues like this most likely get deleted, but figured it was worth a try.

    Update.

Called Apple Support and told them that after a factory restore the problem persisted. They then asked if toggling the speaker solved the problem. I said that it does and immediately after that they began to organise a handset replacement.

Draw your own conclusions from that

Exactly what I was told but a tad differently.  Hardware problem.  New phone works great

Just got off the phone with tech support.  They told me the same patented answer of doing a factory restore.  I'm not going to bother.  I just switched from Android and was hoping that my troubles would be over.  Although I love my iPhone 4S I am not happy about the lack of communication from Apple.  How about a public statement that the problem is being addressed with the Speaker Toggle as a workaround?  The workaround is a pain in my car since I keep my phone in my pocket.

Does anybody know when iOS 5.1 will be released?  Does it definitely fix this problem?
